The PlayStation 5 Pro will be announced by mid-September 2024, a well-known industry insider has said. This claim is part of a more comprehensive report that outlines a number of other alleged details about the upcoming PS5 upgrade, including its official name and design characteristics.

The PS5 Pro has been one of Sony’s worst-kept secrets for a while now, as numerous industry insiders have long insisted that the latest PlayStation console is getting a mid-generation upgrade. According to a number of recent reports, the much-rumored device is likely to hit the market during the 2024 holiday season. Assuming that release window is accurate, Sony’s latest console model is likely to be officially revealed in the coming weeks.

PS5 Pro Announcement Reportedly Coming in September 2024

A new report from Dealabs’ Billbil-kun claims that’s precisely what’s going to happen, stating that Sony’s current plan is to announce the PS5 Pro in the first half of September 2024. The claim implies that the console might end up having a similar reveal-to-release gap as the PS4 Pro, which was officially announced in early September 2016 before becoming available for purchase two and a half months later. A September 2024 announcement also matches a late August report from Italian gaming outlet Multiplayer, which implied that the PS5 Pro will become official sooner rather than later.

PS5 Pro Rumored to Look Slightly Different From PS5 Slim

The Dealabs leak also states that the device will be officially called the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is consistent with past rumors on the matter. Moreover, Billbil-kun claims that they even saw the retail packaging of the console, which suggests that the system will look slightly different from the PS5 Slim and the original PS5 variant. Specifically, the PS5 Pro is said to have three slightly angled horizontal lines on both sides of its chassis rather than just the one adorning the exterior of the PS5 Slim. The console will also supposedly have two USB-C ports next to its power button, just like the PS5 Slim.

The retail packaging cited by Billbil-kun indicated that the device will come without a disc drive. But that’s not to say that Sony isn’t also planning to release a disc version. In fact, the PS5 Pro is most likely going to be modular, much like the Slim model, in the sense that consumers will be able to purchase a disc drive separately from the console itself. The DualSense controller packed with the new console version will reportedly be identical to the one introduced alongside the PS5, as per the same source.

Given the sheer volume of recent leaks on the matter, the PS5 Pro is now looking like a fairly safe bet for a late 2024 release. One thing that remains to be seen is how much the unannounced device will cost, and whether its arrival will make Sony reconsider its resistance to treating the PS5 to a permanent price cut.
