Losing save data is one of the worst things that can happen in a game, but Overmorrow, an upcoming title on the Nintendo Switch does exactly that; only this time it’s on purpose. Overmorrow is an indie adventure game that erases players’ progress after 30 in-game days, presenting a unique adventure with a gimmick that promises to make it all worth it.

The game takes a top-down isometric view of its pixelated landscapes and characters and tasks players with solving the mysteries of the strange island on which they awaken within 30 days or lose everything and start from the beginning. Players can collect runes throughout their journey that will help them in their quest to determine what exactly is going on in this mysterious place they’ve found themselves in.

Falling somewhere between indie and AAA, AA developers have been taking the gaming industry by storm in recent years.

How a Game That Wipes Your Progress Works

The game launched on Steam earlier this year, but a trailer finally appeared online for the Nintendo Switch port after the developer, PixelManta, reached its Kickstarter funding goal for a multi-platform release. The trailer shows off the game’s unique, pixelated art style and lo-fi, peaceful music and environments, but also confirms its official release date of May 17.

While the loss of progress might seem a detriment to some, it is seemingly part of the game’s story, as the island boasts mysterious powers that seem to cause time to work a little differently. As the player collects runes, they can use them to unlock more secrets and further explore the game’s world in a series of fixed-camera environments but they will be in limited supply and can only be replenished through resting, which progresses the day forward.

According to the game’s official Nintendo eShop description, there is no official time limit for finishing the game aside from the 30-day reset, as the player will have unlimited time to explore every individual day. This means they are encouraged to see as much as they can before resting at the end of each day, but also will not be pressured to find absolutely everything over the course of its runtime.

A fairly low-budget indie title, Overmorrow comes from just one solo developer by the name of Marcus Clarke, who published the title under the name Pixel Manta. Clarke funded the game through a Kickstarter campaign which exceeded its goals mere weeks after it first began.

Overmorrow debuts on May 17 for the Nintendo Switch, but eager fans can always check out the Steam version, which is available now for $15.99. However, fans who pre-purchase the Switch port can enjoy a 20% discount from the original price.
