Arthur Morgan was a fantastic protagonist, and one of his best features would be good to see in the next Red Dead Redemption protagonist. After his role in Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur set a high bar for any protagonist after him to meet. The next Red Dead Redemption game will need its own hero to be memorable, because the characters are one of the series’ biggest strengths. Thankfully, the developers should already have a framework for making a quality protagonist. In fact, one of Arthur’s own quirks could provide the exact kind of guidance that they need.

It’s widely agreed that RDR2‘s Arthur Morgan is an amazing protagonist, with several valid reasons to back it up. In a game that thrives on its story, Arthur is the most intricate and interesting character. He’s a tough old cowboy and a lifelong outlaw who lives on the outskirts of society. At the same time, he has a gruff charm to him as well as a sense of honor that increasingly makes itself known throughout the game. The result is a character that is fun to play and fascinating to watch. Red Dead Redemption 2‘s success largely comes from how excellent Arthur was as a protagonist.

Red Dead Redemption 2 excels in one department when it comes to realism, and Red Dead Redemption should follow suit in this regard.

Red Dead Redemption 3’s Protagonist Needs Something Like Arthur’s Journal

Arthur’s Journal Fleshes Him Out Further in Red Dead Redemption 2

In addition to his multifaceted personality, Arthur’s journal in Red Dead Redemption 2 offers further insight into him as a character. It retells the events of the game in his words, acting as a very characteristic recap of events. More notable, however, are the pictures within. The journal is filled with sketches of notable landmarks and characters, as well as plants and wildlife that the player has encountered, and the sketches are fairly good to boot. It’s not a talent that one may expect from an old cowboy like Arthur, and it adds yet another layer to his already multifaceted character.

John also keeps a journal once he becomes playable in
RDR2
, but his sketches are nowhere near as good as Arthur’s.

RDR3’s Protagonist Could Use Some Hobbies of Their Own

Arthur’s journal was a great addition to the game, and it’s something that Red Dead Redemption 3‘s protagonist can learn from. They don’t necessarily have to have their own journal, but they need something that will offer players a deeper look into them. It’s important to flesh them out beyond their role in gameplay, because a good character will stick in the minds of players. Red Dead Redemption 2 proved this not only with Arthur, but almost every major character in the plot. Giving RDR3‘s protagonist a distinctive hobby or pastime could be a helpful way to ensure they stand out.

There Are Several Interests That RDR3’s Protagonist Could Take On

Thankfully, there are a lot of ways to give the next game’s protagonist a charming detail of their own. If Jack becomes Red Dead Redemption 3‘s protagonist, then his interest in reading and writing could see him make a journal similar to Arthur. Some other possibilities could include photography, especially if the game takes place later in the timeline. A sport or game such as darts or baseball could also be something that catches the protagonist’s interest, either as an observer or player. Red Dead Redemption 3 could even possibly incorporate its protagonist’s hobbies into a new minigame or questline if Rockstar wills it.

Arthur is going to be a difficult protagonist to top no matter what, so acknowledging his strengths may be Red Dead Redemption 3‘s smartest move. Red Dead Redemption 3 following up on RDR2 will take an excellent lead in its own right, and that requires a memorable character. A pastime that gives them more definition outside of being a cowboy and gunslinger would be a great way to make them more interesting. Arthur’s journal can act as an inspiration for Red Dead Redemption 3‘s future hero.
