Incredible news about the highly anticipated third season of One Punch Man arose this past week, with a brand-new teaser trailer that revealed information about the one thing fans have been asking about since the original announcement of the series’ made in August 2022: who will be animating it? The second season of One Punch Manhad a very mixed reception as a result of the change in production studio from Madhouse (Death Note) to J.C. Staff (Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls In a Dungeon?).
However, after nearly five years since the second season and next to no information released since the initial announcement, there will be a palpable excitement around the series’ return. The teaser trailer revealed that J.C. Staff will be returning to produce the upcoming third season of One Punch Man, with the focus being the highly anticipated bout between Saitama and Garou. The subtitle of One Punch Man 3 is “Supreme Power vs Ultimate Fear” – the best vs. the best.
It’s Been A Long Time Coming
The Original Announcement Was Nearly Two Years Ago
As mentioned previously, the third season of One Punch Man was confirmed quite some time ago, but not much information about the series’ production was provided when it was announced in August 2022, three years after the second season aired. With so much time in between the second and third season, and between announcements, you’d think that fans would give up on seeing the series any time soon; however, One Punch Man established a huge fandom with its first season, and the manga by ONE and Eyeshield 21 illustrator Yusuke Murata is ongoing.
Various major plot developments and characters have revealed themselves in the manga, causing the anticipation for a third season to rise. Beyond that, the momentum has been buoyed by speculation about which studio would continue the series after many fans felt disappointed by the production quality of the second season, which was produced by J.C. Staff, a respectable studio with countless franchises under their belt.
Who Is Working On Season 3?
Teaser Trailer Revealed A Few Members of (J.C.) Staff
The teaser for the third season also revealed some of the major staff at J.C. who will be working on the series, including legacy series composer Tomohiro Suzuki, who was also responsible for series composition on Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End; character designers Chikashi Kubota (key animation, Dragon Ball Super: Broly), Shinjiro Kuroda (2nd key animation, Sk8 the Infinity) and Ryōsuke Shirakawa (key animation, A Silent Voice); while music is composed by Makoto Miyazaki, who was also responsible for the soundtrack on One Punch Man seasons 1 and 2.
According to sources on animation enthusiast site Sakugabooru, the One Punch Man season 3 teaser trailer was pre-animated by Kenichiro Aoki, who was responsible for the sakuga in season 2; supervised by Kazunori Ozawa (Saga of Tanya the Evil movie). Ozawa himself confirmed this on his private X (Twitter) account. Cast members revealed so far include Makoto Furukawa returning to voice Saitama; Hikaru Midorikawa as Garou, and Daisuke Namikawa as Doctor Genus, the narrator.
Is The Teaser A Good Indicator?
We Might Be In For a Visual Treat
The visuals in the trailer for One Punch Man season 3 were particularly impressive, with a fight between Garou and a giant insectoid monster being the focus while the narrator builds up the anticipation by alluding to the upcoming fight between the Hero Hunter Garou and Saitama, dubbed a clash between a Supreme Power and the Ultimate (manifestation of-) Fear. Some gorgeous lighting and effects were used in the brief parts of the battle, and judging from the teaser trailer, the third season might bring back some of the brilliance that the first season became particularly famous for; but only time will tell. No release date is available yet.
