There is an impressive variety of ghost-hunting activities to do in Phasmophobia and among the most difficult of them is the game’s weekly Challenge Mode. This special gameplay mode of Phasmophobia features a customized difficulty and unique investigation scenarios that require players to use all of their skills and supernatural knowledge with the odds stacked against them. Essentially, Challenge Mode uses its own rules and sends you with a preset equipment loadout while also depriving you of certain other resources. However, if you can overcome those setbacks and succeed, the rewards are well worth it.

Phasmophobia’s Challenge Mode changes its predetermined challenge every week, and one especially terrifying option that it can offer is the Glow in the Dark challenge. As its name suggests, whether solo or with friends, you have to fight against perpetual darkness while completing your investigation, and this definitely gives ghostly culprits an inherent advantage. With the right tools and intuition, however, this challenge can be conquered before a ghost has a chance to chase you down.

How to Start Glow in the Dark Challenge in Phasmophobia

As with other variants of Challenge Mode in Phasmphobia, to start the Glow in the Dark challenge you need to go to the difficulty setting on your player dashboard, where normally adjust your desired difficulty for the next investigation. Use the arrows on the left or right side of your screen to scroll through your options until you reach “Challenge Mode”, as seen above. The name of the challenge will be listed along with an ominous hint about what you’ll dealing with, your overall task, and the hefty XP reward given for completion. This is on top of the base XP earned from the investigation itself. To obtain the full reward, you must complete the challenge itself three times. These do not have to be consecutive, but they must be done within the weekly time allowance or your progress will be lost when the next challenge becomes available.

Phasmophobia: Scariest Ghosts, Ranked

Phasmophobia is home to an array of terrifying entities; here are the scariest ghosts players can come across in the game.

To complete the Glow in the Dark challenge in Phasmophobia you must find and successfully identify the correct ghost just like in any other investigation. However, this challenge must be done on the 42 Edgefield Road map and is arguably one of the most difficult ones in the game to date because it takes away one of your most fundamental necessities for safe ghost hunting – light. The fuse box inside the house is permanently disabled, so you cannot turn on any lights that would otherwise help you see or preserve your sanity.

In addition, you won’t get to start the investigation with a set grace period, or setup time. This refers to the amount of time (up to 5 minutes) shown inside the van that you have to get your equipment ready before the ghost technically becomes “active”. However, the screens in the van that show your sanity meters, active sound sensors, the location map, and ghost activity are all functional, and you start with 100% sanity.

You’ll be sent to 42 Edgefield Road with a preset loadout of Tier 1 equipment that includes the following:

  • Head Gear (functions as a camera)
  • EMF Readers
  • Thermometers
  • UV Lights
  • DOTS Projectors
  • Spirit Boxes
  • Photo Cameras
  • Salt
  • Ghost Writing Books
  • Incense
  • Igniters
  • Parabolic Microphones
  • Crucifixes
  • Sound Sensors
  • Sanity Medication

You’ll notice that missing from that loadout is flashlights, firelights, tripods, handheld video cameras, and motion sensors. This is intended to cripple your ease of not only getting around the house but locating the ghost itself. You’ll have to make do with what you have and be as quick as possible because the longer you’re in the dark, the faster your sanity will drain, and that puts you at greater risk of being hunted by the ghost. However, whether you’re new to the game or have been playing it awhile, there are some crafty tricks you can use to stay safe until your investigation is done.

Best Tips to Beat Glow in the Dark Challenge in Phasmophobia

Staying alive in the dark in Phasmophobia is no easy feat, especially when you’re uncomfortably limited on your equipment choices. The Glow in the Dark challenge forces you to tackle that exact scenario but there are ways to make things easier and get those ghosts identified quickly.

Play With Friends

The most universally effective and reliable way to make any challenge in Phasmophobia easier is by tackling it with friends. Having more boots on the ground helps expedite the investigate process, and this is especially important when being in constant darkness puts you against the clock. Your allies can help track down the ghost’s exact location, ferry in and set up equipment, and gather evidence that you might otherwise miss. If you feel unsure about what the ghost’s identity might be, your friend may know the answer.

Use a UV Light For Guidance

While this challenge deprives you of reliable equipment items like flashlights that help you find your way in the dark, you can still do the same to a relative degree with the UV flashlights you’re provided. When properly shaken with the appropriate action button, the UV flashlight acts like a glowstick and can help you navigate the house until you find the ghost’s room. From there, use it as intended to detect any ghost handprints or footprints.

Use Head Gear as Your Camera

The Glow in the Dark challenge takes away your access to handheld video cameras that can help you look for evidence such as Ghost Orbs and otherwise help you detect animated evidence (e.g. – Ghost Writing, DOTS) when you’re not in the room. However, the Head Gear equipment can act as a suitable replacement, as it has a built-in camera that can be viewed from the van as long as it’s activated. Unfortunately, the one caveat to this is that since it’s not a stationary camera and it can’t be removed from your head, it can really only be used when you’re in a group, where someone can stay in the van and observe. If you’re playing solo, this trick sadly won’t work.

Use Sound Instead of Sight

This challenge all but takes away your sense of sight, which can leave you feeling completely vulnerable. However, that simply means that you need to rely on your other main sense – sound. One of the most reliable methods of tracking down any ghost in Phasmophobia is by listening for certain sounds at the start of your investigation. The ghost will open any doors that are on its determined path and throw nearby objects, and all of this produces noise you can use to pinpoint your culprit. Furthermore, you can place the Sound Sensors in different sections of the house if you’re struggling with the first method. Go back inside the van and watch for noise activity on the TV screens, as the ghost will still be active even if you’re not inside the house.

Pile Equipment By the Front Door

One thing you should always do in a Phasmophobia challenge where time and/or sanity is limited is put plenty of equipment by the front door, to make it easier to ferry what you need inside without having to run back into the van every single time. Also, remember that your sanity only drops when you’re inside the location itself, and the contract doesn’t officially start until the front door is opened, so you lose nothing by giving yourself this bit of convenience.
