A talented Pokemon fan has created a baby form for Scyther, giving the Gen 1 Pokemon a new look. Pokemon fans explore various themes when creating fan art, and a popular one is giving baby forms to Pokemon that don’t have one.

One of these Pokemon is Scyther, a bipedal insectoid with one of the most iconic Bug-type Pokemon designs. Scyther’s distinguishing features are its arms, which carry two powerful blades to hunt its prey, and its green body, which helps with camouflage. Introduced in Gen 1, Scyther is one of the Pokemon with appearances in games of all generations, and even in side games such as Pokemon Snap and Pokemon Rumble. Outside the games, it has appeared several times in the Pokemon manga and anime, the most notable cases being Tracey’s and Goh’s Scythers. Scyther has two evolutions, Scizor and Kleavor, but showing their creativity, a Pokemon fan has imagined a new form that Scyther doesn’t have yet.

Reddit user MengShuZ created a baby form for Scyther called “Mantle the Sickle Pokemon.” The Pokemon has rounded white and yellow feet, and while Scyther has its own famous pair of scythes, Mantle has two rounded white scythes. Its body is a darker yellow, with the arms, legs, and chest in a lighter shade of yellow. The artist depicts Mantle in several different moods, like smiling, sleeping, playful, and with a more angry look, showing just how cute this pure Bug-type Pokemon can be.

Accompanying MengShuZ’s fan art, the artist has developed a Pokedex entry and statistics for it. According to them, Mantle lives in forests and spends most of its time cutting down trees to sharpen its scythes. It is a pure Bug-type Pokemon that curiously doesn’t have wings to fly. Mantle weighs 20 pounds or 9 kilograms and is 2’3″ or 68.5 centimeters tall, far from being one of the smallest Pokemon. Mantle has a competitive temperament but is also very friendly to any trainer who catches it. It usually trains with Scyther to hone its blades, and it evolves into its “big brother” after beating enough opponents.

Baby Pokemon are often considered to be cuter versions of Pokemon. MengShuZ’s fan art captures this idea, incorporating Scyther’s basic design into a competitive baby form, but one that hasn’t lost its innocent look. In the comments, the artist jokingly said they “hope that one day Game Freak will see their creations.” Considering how adorable Mantle is, there’s a good chance that Pokemon fans will share that hope.
