Pokemon Scarlet & Violet: 16 Best Poison Types In The Game

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet added a variety of new Pokemon with the ninth generation of the franchise. This even included a few new options for players who are determined to use Poison-type Pokemon on their team. Although poison-type moves are only super effective against both grass and Fairy-type Pokemon, it is also one of the eighteen types to only have two weaknesses of its own.

Gamers who are looking for a great Poison ally should look no further than these new Pokemon as well as some of these golden choices from past franchises that have once again made an appearance in the new title.

Updated on February 25, 2024, by Megan Smith: Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a wide variety of some of the best poison-type Pokemon in the franchise. With a collection of both new and old Pokemon available, players have an assortment of poison types to choose from, including those that combine types such as a Ground Poison Pokemon or even an Electric type combined with the Poison type. Since the game was originally released in November 2022, the game has received two interesting DLCs. Both of these have not only added new Pokemon but also brought back some fan favorites, so players have more than the Poison Ground type Pokemon of Clodsire. With this in mind, these are by far the best poison-type Pokemon a player may wish to capture for their team.

16 Clodsire

EV Yield: 2 Hit Points

In the ninth generation of the Pokemon franchise, Wooper finally received its own new Paldean form where instead of being a dual-type of Water and Ground, it was instead Poison and Ground. This, therefore, meant that Wooper also came with a new evolution where it transformed into the spiny fish Pokemon known as Clodsire.

Unfortunately, Clodsire is one of the weakest poison types players can have on their team, as Paldean Wooper can be found quite early into a player’s adventure. Evolving it into Clodsire is a great idea for an early Poison and Ground-type to pick up.

15 Grafaiai

EV Yield: 2 Speed

Although the evolution pattern doesn’t make sense for Grafaiai due to its previous evolution being a toxic mouse Pokemon, somehow, this Normal and Poison-type becomes the toxic monkey Grafaifai. While Normal-types on their own aren’t very effective due to not being strong against anything, coupling this up with Poison gives Grafaifai more of a chance in battle.

Players shouldn’t be fooled by its cute appearance, as it has been known to draw poisonous patterns on trees that will draw in Bug Pokemon for it to eat. Another great reason to have this poisonous creature is due to it being the only Pokemon that can learn the move Doodle, which allows the Pokemon to copy the abilities of its enemy.

14 Swalot

EV Yield: 2 Hit Points

Joining Pokemon from as early as the third generation of the franchise. Swalot may not be new to the region of Paldea, but that doesn’t stop it from being a viable option when deciding on a great Poison-type to bring to the Grass gym leader’s battle.

As purely a Poison-type as well, this will also mean players don’t need to worry about other weaknesses that this poison bag Pokemon may be injured by. Its pre-evolution Gulpin can also be found quite early into a player’s travels, and therefore it can also be evolved quickly around level twenty-six.

13 Skuntank

EV Yield: 2 Hit Points

Another favored Pokemon that was originally revealed in generation four, Skuntank is a brilliant addition to any player’s roster who is looking for the perfect matchup of both poison and darkness. While this skunk may look quite unassuming, Skuntank is another pocket monster with an incredibly high attack stat that makes sure every hit counts.

Evolving from Stunky, this Pokemon can be found with either the ability of Stench or Aftermath; both of these can be incredibly useful in battle, with Aftermath causing damage after Skuntank has passed out to Stench having a small percent chance of causing the opposing Pokemon to flinch when it attempts to attack.

12 Dragalge

EV Yield: 2 Special Defense

Dragalge combines the lethal power of a Dragon-type Pokemon with the lasting effects of a poison type. Once evolving this Mock Kelp Pokemon at level forty-eight, players will have their very own underwater dragon that is sure to do some damage to their opponents.

It is, however, important to note that Dragalge is a Pokemon Scarlet exclusive, and therefore, while Scarlet players can find this Pokemon roaming in the wild, those that have the Violet version of the game will need to trade with a Scarlet player.

11 Amoonguss

EV Yield: 2 Hit Points

Although a new paradox version of this mushroom Pokemon was added exclusively to Pokemon Scarlet, Brute Bonnet replaces its Poison-typing with Dark instead. Luckily, this means both those who own Scarlet or Violet can still catch an Amoonguss for themselves in the wild.

Unlike its newest ancestor, this Pokemon has been in the game since the fifth generation of Pokemon and still remains a great option to bring into battle if a player needs a Poison-type, especially as it combines its power with one of its own weaknesses by also being a Grass-type.

10 Toxicroak

EV Yield: 2 Attack

Evolving from Croagunk at around level thirty-seven, Toxicroak is a Pokemon from the fourth generation that has also found its place as one of the best Poison-types Violet and Scarlet have to offer. With its incredibly high attack and attack speed stat, Toxicroak is sure to be one of the hardest hitters on a player’s team while also emitting gradual damage through its poison.

Besides being a Poison-type, Toxicroak is also a Fighting-type Pokemon. Therefore, combining its poisonous nature with multiple fighting moves makes Toxicroak an incredibly ruthless pocket monster to use in almost any battle.

9 Venomoth

EV Yield: 1 Special Attack & 1 Speed

Although Venomoth may not have any iconic signature moves and a design that many may consider incredibly unassuming, Venomoth is a Bug-type Pokemon with a lot of personality on the battlefield.

As its name suggests, Venomoth is a venomous moth that combines the typing of a Bug with Poison to make a lethal companion that has been around since the first generation. The moth continues to make a name for itself even in the ninth generation of the franchise, where it continues to be incredibly agile on the battlefield where its attack speed is its highest stat.

8 Salazzle

EV Yield: 2 Speed

Evolving from only a female Salandit, the Salazzle is another great choice when looking for a brilliant Poison-type Pokemon to add to the team. Not only is this sleek salamander a Poison-type Pokemon, but it’s also paired up with the fire type making her ruthless against a variety of foes.

While in past generations of the franchise Salazzle’s signature move was Corrosion, a move that allowed players to inflict poison on any enemy, even those that are steel. However, this was changed in the ninth generation to give her the signature move of Fire Lash.

7 Revavroom

EV Yield: 2 Attack

This multi-cyl Pokemon tends to be transformed into a lot of different typing depending on the boss the player is facing. However, some players may not know that they can get their hands on a Revavroom.

Evolving from Varoom at level forty, this is a Pokemon many players may not have in their roster until they are deep into adventuring Paldea. Unlike the Starmobiles owned by the bosses that are a singular type, the player’s Revavroom will be a dual-type of Poison and Steel.

6 Glimmora

EV Yield: 2 Special Attack

Another new addition to the ninth generation of the franchise is the rock and poison type Glimmora. Players can either find this evolution in the wild or evolve the Ore Pokemon themselves by catching a Glimmet.

Glimmora is just as valuable as it looks, with it being another new Pokemon to Scarlet and Violet that has its own signature move to learn. While leveling them up, it may ask to learn the move Mortal Spin; Glimmora can not only rid itself of effects such as Bind, Wrap, or Leech Seed but will also poison the enemy in the process.

5 Venusaur

EV Yield: 2 Special Attack & 1 Special Defense

Alongside the newly created Pokemon brought along by both DLCs for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, there has also been the return of many cult classics, including the most loved of them all the first-generation grass starter Pokemon, Bulbasaur.

Players are able to catch a Bulbasaur while exploring specific areas of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero, such as the Coastal Biome, or the Torchlit Labyrinth. Then players must simply level up their Bulbasaur until level 32 to evolve it into its final evolution of Venusaur, an incredibly deadly special attacker, with the defense to also keep it alive.

4 Toxtricity

EV Yield: 2 Special Attack

Unlike the other Pokemon mentioned on this list, Toxtricity is still quite new to the franchise, as it was only added in the eighth generation of Pokemon Sword and Shield. Combining Electricity with Poison continues to keep the Punk Pokemon as one of the best Poison-types players would want to bring into battle.

Besides its brilliant dual-typing, similar to Glimmora, it also possesses a signature move that other Pokemon can’t learn. Overdrive deals an immense amount of damage to all enemies in the battle as long as they can hear it.

3 Okidogi

EV Yield: 3 Attack

The majority of new Poison-type Pokemon for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet were added with the DLC known as The Teal Mask. This gives players several new Poison Pokemon to capture, including the incredibly powerful Okidogi. This Retainer Pokemon combines the type of Poison with Fighting to create one of the most lethal combinations in Pokemon history.

Fighting types are known to already be quite hard-hitting, and this combined with poison means players can slowly injure their opponent too. By also being part of the group known as the Pecharunt’s Loyal Three, it is one of three Pokemon to also have the Toxic Chain ability. This can badly poison the player’s opponent’s Pokemon if it doesn’t target Okidogi.

2 Munkidori

EV Yield: 3 Special Attack

Another member of Pecharunt’s Loyal Three, as well as a highly lethal Pokemon, is the Poison and Psychic-type known as Munkidori. This Pokemon is also described as a retainer Pokemon with the single purpose of protecting its trainer or fellow pocket monsters.

As a Special Attacker, Munkidori has the potential to do a lot of damage to an opponent as long as their special defense isn’t any good. Besides this, Munkidori also learns a variety of incredibly powerful moves, including Sludge Wave and Psybeam, which are sure to swiftly dispatch an opponent’s Pokemon.

1 Iron Moth

EV Yield: 3 Special Attack

Out of all the Poison-type Pokemon that were added during Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, by far the best poison type available to players is Iron Moth. As a futuristic version of Volcarona, this Pokemon combines the typing of poison with fire to make an unrelenting companion for players.

Unfortunately, this is a Violet-exclusive Pokemon meaning it can’t be caught in the wild by those that own Scarlet. This means that if a player wants to earn this Pokemon, they will need to plan a trade with someone who has it.
