1. Dead Space

While each of October 2024’s PS Plus games has its merits, the Dead Space remake from 2023 is a standout addition thanks to its refreshing approach to the increasingly popular remake trend. Dead Space (2023) is a full remake of the 2008 survival horror classic and the first Dead Space game to be released since Dead Space 3 in 2013. The plot for the remake is the same as the original, following player-controlled engineer Isaac Clarke as he navigates a mining ship filled with horrifying Necromorphs — deadly reanimated corpses that come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. As Isaac navigates the ship, he struggles to keep his growing psychosis at bay, which comes into play regularly throughout the game.

The Dead Space remake has the bones of the original game, but there are plenty of unique additions that even Dead Space veterans should enjoy. For example, the original game had Isaac as a silent protagonist, but the remake’s Isaac is fully voiced. This also affects Isaac’s interactions with other characters, allowing him to engage and bond with them. The Dead Space remake is also more gory than the original game, and weapons can be acquired simply by progressing through the story rather than purchasing them.

2. WWE 2K24

Wrestling fans should download WWE 2K24 while they can, as its celebration of 40 years of WrestleMania with new gameplay modes and enhanced match types should be enough to keep them busy for a while. WWE 2K24 incrementally improves upon its predecessor with more immersive gameplay, but its various game modes are where it stands out. Included in WWE 2K24 are match types like Ambulance Match, Casket Match, and Gauntlet Match. The Showcase of the Immortals mode allows players to recreate iconic matches like Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant and Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels. WWE 2K24 even has a Universe sandbox mode that allows players to control storylines, rivalries, and alliances in the game.

3. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus!

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! might come across as an interesting addition to October 2024’s PS Plus lineup, but it is far more than meets the eye. This visual novel is a psychological horror that masquerades as a lighthearted dating sim, and has earned critical acclaim since its release. In fact, Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is currently sitting comfortably at a Steam rating of “Overwhelmingly Positive” with over 22,000 reviews.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! is the entirety of the original visual novel, along with six new side stories and a shorter seventh story. The game follows a student who joins the high school literature club and is then given a choice to pursue a romantic relationship with three other students. At first glance, it looks like an innocent dating sim, but it eventually morphs into psychological horror and even regularly breaks through the fourth wall.
