Rabbit & Steel is an action roguelike combining precision dodging from top-down shoot ’em ups like Jamestown or Raging Blasters, with complex boss mechanics inspired by the MMO raiding experience from games such as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 14. Players choose from one of five different classes to play, ranging from the spellcasting wizard, to the lumbering heavyblade, to the supportive dancer.

However, hidden classes have been discovered in the game as secret unlockables. These additional characters double the playable options from five to ten, including unique archetypes such as the spellblade, defender, and ancient. Here’s how to unlock them all.

How to Unlock Secret Classes in Rabbit & Steel

At the end of each zone, players will encounter a powerful area boss with harder attack patterns and more complex mechanics than preceding enemies in the zone. Hidden character classes in Rabbit & Steel can be unlocked by defeating each area’s boss on the Hard difficulty setting. Successfully completing an area on Hard Mode will unlock a single class. Each class corresponds to a specific area, making it possible for players to target the class they’re most interested in playing. The characters can be unlocked as follows:

  • Spellsword Rabbit: Beat the Scholar’s Nest on Hard mode.
  • Sniper Rabbit: Beat the King’s Arsenal on Hard mode.
  • Bruiser Rabbit: Beat the Red Darkhouse on Hard mode.
  • Defender Rabbit: Beat the Churchmouse Streets on Hard mode.
  • Ancient Rabbit: Beat the Emerald Lakeside on Hard mode.

While the game will progress through locations randomly after defeating each area boss, players can choose a specific zone to start in if they’ve seen the area at least once before on a given difficulty setting. This can be done either on the Start Run screen by using the Plan Route button, or in the in-game preparation lobby by using the Map & Difficulty menu. Players looking to unlock each class should take advantage of this option to guarantee that they will enter areas yielding characters they have yet to obtain.

Alternative Method to Unlock Secret Classes

While defeating bosses on Hard Mode allows players to select which classes to go after, the difficulty of these bosses may make this option inaccessible to some. Fortunately, developer mino_dev has revealed that most things are unlockable even on easier difficulties, such as Normal or Cute. For example, one class can be unlocked by defeating 8 bosses on any difficulty setting. This could suggest that players who are looking to avoid the Hard Mode bosses will need to grind wins against their lower-difficulty versions to unlock the hidden classes.

The game keeps track of the number of bosses defeated so far within the collection menu. Players can access this screen from the main menu by selecting the Extra button followed by Collection, or via the pause menu by selecting the book icon located above the Resume button. These alternate conditions for unlocking characters are still being discovered, so be sure to check back in as more are revealed.
