Shang-Chi fans have been waiting for its sequel and due to the long wait, some felt they were being forgotten. However, the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings lead star wants supporters to relax because Shang-Chi 2 is definitely happening.

The first Shang-Chi movie was released in 2021 as part of MCU’s Phase Four. It performed well at the box office, grossing over $432 million worldwide. Marvel fans were very impressed not just by Liu’s performance, but with the storyline as well. For years, they have been anticipating the continuation of Shang-Chi’s adventures, but the lack of updates about the sequel’s development has left many disappointed. However, the Barbie actor assures fans that Shang-Chi 2 is definitely in the works.

Shang-Chi 2 Star Shares Disappointing Update About Sequel

One of the Shang-Chi 2 stars shared what could be a disappointing update for fans.

Liu sat down for an interview with The Press Trust of India when his new film, Jackpot, hit Prime Video. He was asked about the sequel of his superhero movie and he gave a promising update. “A lot of it is above my pay grade but it’s definitely happening,” Liu said. He hints that they are already working on it and teases that fans will love it. However, Liu can’t stay too much about it. He added, “So, just very excited to kind of work on it and it’s going to be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that.”

Liu has remained optimistic about the movie and is consistent in giving positive updates when asked about the sequel. For instance, in April, when a fan said she felt Marvel abandoned the Shang-Chi fanbase due to the alleged lack of effort to film the sequel and for not featuring the Shang-Chi characters in other Marvel movies, he gave a similar response. “I proooomiss it’s happening,” Liu commented on the fan’s post on Thread. However, his recent update was in stark contrast to Awkwafina’s statement. Awkwafina plays Katy, a hotel valet and Shang-Chi’s best friend in the film. The two actors also starred together in the new action comedy film Jackpot. Awkwafina was asked about the Shang-Chi sequel at the junket of their new movie and she gave a disappointing update. According to Awkwafina, she had yet to hear any update about Shang-Chi 2, suggesting that it wasn’t in the works yet or maybe she wasn’t updated about its development.

There’s no denying that three years is a long wait for a sequel that hasn’t received a solid update. In addition, the disappointing update from Awkwafina seemingly suggests that the film is not among the priorities in the MCU. There was even no announcement about it at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. However, Shang-Chi 2 has been confirmed and its lead star has consistently assured fans that it’s happening, so it likely will. Also, considering its performance at the box office, Marvel is unlikely to cancel it. The first Shang-Chi movie performed better than The Eternals (2021), The Marvels (2023) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). There were even claims that since the three films were flopped, Marvel scrapped Eternals 2, The Marvels 3 and Ant-Man 4. Marvel Studios reportedly wants to focus on projects that will be a sure hit and with the performance of the first Shang-Chi movie, it will likely be given a sequel. There has yet to be an official release date for Shang-Chi 2, but fans can keep their hopes high, of course, unless Marvel officially cancels it.
