Highlights

  • Some UK retailers have cut PlayStation VR2 prices.
  • The headset originally was priced at $549.99, now available for as low as £329.99 ($424) at Smyth’s Toys.
  • Sony’s lack of first-party game support for PS VR2 helped lead to lower demand.

Several major retailers in the UK have heavily slashed prices for the PlayStation VR2 headset. Sony released the PlayStation VR2 early last year at a price of $549.99, which was considered rather steep by many since the headset requires a PlayStation 5 to function, pushing the total cost of the setup to over $1,000.

With the high barrier of entry already working against it, the PS VR2’s lack of support from Sony’s first-party teams further added to its decline in popularity. To date, only two proper first-party games exist on the PS VR2 – Horizon: Call of the Mountain and Gran Turismo 7‘s VR mode – both of which launched alongside the headset a year ago. Since then, the PS VR2 has only been propped up by second-party and third-party titles, which seemingly haven’t been enough to justify a purchase for many. It’s no wonder, then, that Sony is expanding PS VR2 functionality to PC by way of a specialized adapter this coming August.

The gaming giant also discounted the PS VR2 by a full $100 during its Days of Play 2024 promotional period to possibly sway prospective buyers. Although Days of Play concluded a long time ago, it appears residents in the United Kingdom can take advantage of some deals on the PS VR2 from third-party retailers like Amazon UK, Smyth’s Toys, ShopTo, Currys, Argos, and GAME. At the time of writing, the PS VR2 is listed for £347.26 ($447 USD) on Amazon UK, down from its usual £529.99 price tag by 34%. A similar 32% discount has also been applied to the Horizon: Call of the Mountain bundle, coming in at £389 ($500).

Every UK Retailer Offering Deals on PS VR2

Those who still aren’t convinced by the significant price cut on Amazon UK can head on over to Smyth’s Toys, which is offering the PS VR2 for just £329.99 ($424), the lowest price for the headset so far in its lifecycle. Since these drastic reductions aren’t reflected in Sony’s official PlayStation Direct storefront, some speculate that it might be an effort from the aforementioned third-party retailers to clear unsold stock. It was even reported earlier this year that Sony might have halted PS VR2 production due to an abundance of unsold stock, so the theories are quite plausible.

Regardless of the reason behind them, these price cuts do somewhat enhance the value proposition of the PS VR2 headset. Several VR enthusiasts have lauded the high-end features that the PS VR2 brings at a relatively cheaper price point, such as foveated rendering, 4K OLED displays, eye tracking, etc. While it may not have a very robust game library compared to the Meta Quest headset, the PS VR2’s upcoming PC integration should hopefully overcome that hurdle for current and future owners.
