Star Wars is filled with a plethora of powerful characters. Some are physically stronger than others, while some are more powerful in the Force, so even if they might lose a hand-to-hand fight, they can hold their own in other ways. Not all of these characters have appeared on-screen though.
Prior to Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, Star Wars introduced hundreds of characters through books, comics, and video games. After Disney took over, they deemed these characters not seen on screen as Legends. Still, Star Wars Legends features some of the strongest characters in the entire universe.

Whether he’s Galen Marek in Star Wars The Force Unleashed video game, or the clone called Starkiller in The Force Unleashed 2, Marek is one of the most powerful Star Wars characters. His natural Force abilities led Darth Vader to select him as his secret apprentice.
Marek holds the distinction of being one of the few characters to best Darth Vader in battle, even though it cost Marek his life. Yet while he was alive, Marek displayed a level of Force ability that far exceeded most other Force users in the franchise.
9 A’Sharad Hett/Darth Krayt
Tusken Raider Turned Jedi Turned Sith
- First Appearance: Star Wars # 10 – Outlander, Part 4
Growing up on Tatooine, A’Sharad Hett was a Tusken Raider with Force powers. Trained by Ki-Adi-Mundi and An’ya Kuro, Hett was able to survive Order 66. Abandoning the Jedi following the rise of the Empire, Hett returns to Tatooine to be a Tusken Raider once again.
While on Tatooine, Hett makes contact with one of the original Sith Lords and becomes corrupted by the Dark Side of the Force. He then takes on the name of Darth Krayt and leads an army of Sith into battle. It took Cade Skywalker, Luke’s grandson, to defeat him.
8 Kyp Durron
Luke Skywalker’s Greatest Student
- First Appearance: Jedi Legend
Following the founding of the New Jedi Order, Luke Skywalker takes on new Force-sensitive students. One of the best of these students is Kyp Durron. While battling immense suffering following the loss of his brother, Durron studied under Luke and even learned how to channel the Dark Side to his will.
Kyp could be a bit belligerent, but he had remarkable control over the Force on several occasions. In one case, Kyp transports an artificial black hole all by himself, and was so powerful with Mind Tricks that he could influence entire rooms of people.
7 Darth Bane
Implemented The Rule of Two
- First Appearance: Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episode: “Sacrifice”
Darth Bane is one of the most famous and powerful Sith ever introduced in Star Wars. Following the Sith Civil War, Darth Bane brought order back to the Dark Side of the Force by implementing the Rule of Two. The greedy and power-hungry teachings of the Sith led to infighting that had made it easy for the Jedi to defeat them.
The Rule of Two allowed the Sith to continue their teachings and save themselves from self-destruction. Bane was also incredibly skilled with a lightsaber and used his enemies’ suffering to heal himself. While Bane has appeared in canon, most of his lore comes from Legends.
6 Exar Kun
Hypnotized Entire Galactic Senate
- First Physical Appearance: Jedi Search
Living 4,000 years before the Battle of Yavin, Exar Kun was one of the first Jedi to fall to the Dark Side. As a newly minted Sith, Kun waged war against his former friends and the Old Republic. As part of the Old Sith Wars, he used Sith sorcery to hypnotize the Galactic Senate, killed countless Jedi, and nearly destroyed the Old Republic single-handedly.
Following his death, Kun became trapped in a temple on Yavin IV for millennia but was still able to wreak havoc in the area. Students of Luke Skywalker finally banished Kun during the New Republic Era.
5 Darth Revan
Credited With Winning Mandalorian Wars
Darth Revan is one of many Jedi who fell to the Dark Side of the Force and showed immense power as a Sith Lord. Revan and apprentice Darth Malak are credited with committing the atrocities that ended the Mandalorian War and then setting their sights on building a new Sith Empire.
Eventually, Revan would be overthrown by Malak, but Revan would survive. He just loses his memories. In the Knights of the Old Republic video game, Revan is able to overthrow Malak again. However, it’s the player’s choice whether Revan revives the Jedi Order or reclaims the title of Sith Emperor.
4 Darth Nihilus
Bound Spirit To Mask And Armor
One of the survivors of Darth Revan’s atrocities during the Mandalorian War, Darth Nihilus became a living void and part of The Sith Triumvirate. He bound his spirit to his mask and armor, allowing him to consume the Living Force from any being he came across. Nihilus was able to resurrect the Sith Empire as he made his way across the galaxy.
It took a former apprentice known only as “the Exile” to defeat Nihilus and end his bloody reign. While he hasn’t appeared in Star Wars canon, his abilities have been seen being used by Darth Sidious.
3 Darth Vitiate
Bent Thousands Of Sith Lords To His Will
- First Physical Appearance: Star Wars: The Old Republic, Blood of the Empire Act 1: Shades of the Sith
Few have controlled the Sith the way Darth Vitiate, also known as Tenebrae, did. He was the Emperor of the Sith for a millennium after manifesting his powers at a very young age. The illegitimate son of Sith Lord Dramath, he was able to mold the Force in ways that hadn’t been seen in lifetimes as the height of his power.
Darth Vitiate was able to deprive others of their powers by the time he was ten years old, and did so to his father before trapping his spirit for a millennium of torture. His control over the Dark Side led to an extended life for the Sith Emperor. He used Essence Transfer to move his consciousness between bodies and avoided death in this way.
2 The Gods of Mortis
Most Attuned To The Force
- First Appearance: Star Wars: The Clone Wars Episode: “Overlords”
The Gods of Mortis recently made a canonical appearance in statue form in Star Wars: Ahsoka, but the bulk of their story happens in Legends. The son and daughter represent the Dark and Light Sides of the Force, while the father maintains the balance. They are better attuned to the Force than any mortal, even though they don’t use it.
The Gods of Mortis are intended to take a neutral view while overseeing the Galaxy. This trio of deities represents some of the greatest collections of power in the Star Wars universe.
1 Abeloth
Bringer of Chaos
- First Appearance: Fate of the Jedi: Outcast
While the Gods of Mortis represent the father, son, and daughter, Abeloth, the mother is almost as powerful as the other three by herself. Drinking from the Font of Power and then bathing in the Pool of Knowledge, Abeloth is an immortal Force demigod. She overpowered both the son and daughter before the Father jumped in to bring balance.
Abeloth is able to possess multiple people at one time and can re-form after suffering any damage. Luke Skywalker described Abeloth as beyond human comprehension. She can be defeated but never killed, making her the most powerful character in Legends.
