Super Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai Gives Update on His Future Plans

The creator of Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai, gives fans an update about his plans for the future and answers what they can expect from him.

In a new showcase video released on the official Smash Remix YouTube channel, it first shows off a scene similar to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s reveal trailers, revealing that Ebisumaru is a playable boss variant of Goemon, having a different moveset than Goemon. Shortly after Ebisumaru’s trailer, it transitions into a trailer for Banjo-Kazooie, who plays similarly to when he was introduced as a DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Banjo’s trailer is a charming animation that has several members of Smash Remix’s roster playing in a band alongside Banjo.

Characters Added in Smash Remix Update 1.5.0

  • Banjo & Kazooie – New Character
  • Ebisumaru – Boss variant for Goemon
  • Metal Luigi – Boss variant for Luigi
  • Mad Piano – Boss variant for Kirby
  • Dragon King – Boss variant for Captain Falcon

The final reveal trailer in this showcase is for a rather unexpected character, which is the Dragon King, an alternate boss character variant based on Captain Falcon. Dragon King originates from Masahiro Sakurai’s scrapped fighting game of the same name, with this character retaining its appearance based on the early footage and screenshots that the Super Smash Bros. director previously revealed in 2022. The game’s UI can even change to the Dragon King prototype’s UI if all four players choose the Dragon King character.

Other additions and features were outlined in this video by the Smash Remix team. This includes several new stages based on iconic locations from across Nintendo’s history, new remixed single-player stages, a gallery for the congratulations images, customizable stage hazards, Pokemon appearance rate, and even new items like the P-Wing from Super Mario Bros. 3.

The video showcase ends with a compilation set to an N64 soundfont rendition of “Happy Together” by The Turtles, which was the song used in the iconic Super Smash Bros. commercial that featured Mario, Yoshi, Pikachu, and Donkey Kong beating each other up in a field of flowers. Many fans praised the ending montage, as it brought them nostalgic memories of the original commercial while giving it a fresh modern twist thanks to the new content in Smash Remix.
