When it comes to popular puzzle games with PvP multiplayer, it doesn’t get much bigger than Tetris 99. This unique spin on a classic title takes everybody’s favorite game of Tetris and adds a new online component, allowing players to battle it out in gigantic 99-player lobbies. But if that wasn’t enough action, Nintendo also periodically hosts special Maximus Cup events to promote other first-party titles and put some special rewards up for grabs. The tournaments usually take place over the course of a weekend, with players all over the world competing to win the most number of games within the allotted days.

Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35, and Pac-Man 99 have changed the landscape of battle royale games, and plenty other classic games should join them.
After kicking off the first Maximus Cup in 2019, Tetris 99 is now gearing up to launch its 42nd event with a special Splatoon 3 theme based on the title’s Side Order DLC. In a new post on the Splatoon Twitter account, Nintendo confirmed that the 42nd Maximus Cup will take place between midnight PT on Friday, August 16, and 11:59 PM PT on Monday, August 19.
Tetris 99 Is Crossing Over With Splatoon 3 For New Maximus Cup
The last Maximus Cup took place at the end of June and featured a crossover theme with another popular Battle Royale game for the Nintendo Switch, F-Zero 99. But this time around, players will be able to battle it out with the chance to earn a new in-game theme from Splatoon 3‘s Side Order DLC, which was released back in February. But it is worth noting that only Tetris 99 players who are subscribed to Nintendo Switch Online will be able to partake in the upcoming Maximus Cup event.
Splatoon 3‘s Side Order DLC was released as part of the game’s second wave of Expansion Pass content, with some brand-new single-player content for fans to check out. Splatoon 3‘s second DLC sees players assume the role of a returning character from Splatoon 2 known as Agent 8, as she attempts to make her way to the top of the Spire of Order tower.
Despite now being five years old, Tetris 99 remains a hugely popular title for the Nintendo Switch and even occasionally surprises players with new patch updates. For players who remain loyal to Arika’s popular Battle Royale title and are looking to get their hands on a special Tetris 99 theme inspired by Splatoon 3‘s Side Order DLC, they’ll need to put their skills to the test and earn 100 event points to earn the exclusive reward.
