Jujutsu Kaisen is known for its thrilling action sequences and over-the-top offensive moves. After all, every character has their own unique way of attacking their opponent. Some are quite straightforward, such as Yuji’s Black Flash or Nanami’s Ratio Technique, some characters have strange and over-the-top offensive moves, such as Mahito’s Idle Transfiguration or Geto’s Cursed Spirit Manipulation, while others are quite breathtaking to behold, such as Gojo’s Hollow Technique: Purple or Uraume’s Ice Formation.

While it is certainly fun to talk about the wide variety of offensive moves in Jujutsu Kaisen, many people don’t realize the fact that this series offers some amazing defensive techniques as well. There are some defense techniques that lots of sorcerers and spirits can do, such as Simple Domain or Hollow Wicker Basket. However, this article will focus on innate cursed techniques that are not only great at offense but exceptional at defense as well.

Uraume’s Ice Formation

Jujutsu Kaisen Uraume Ice Wall

First Appearance

Episode 46, “Transformation, Part 2”

Air Date

December 22, 2023

As Sukuna’s loyal attendant, it’s easy for people to dismiss Uraume as somebody who only survives because he is under the protection of the King of Curses. That assessment, however, couldn’t be further from the truth. Uraume is often the first line of defense that you should go through before you get the chance to face Sukuna. Considering many powerful cursed spirits and jujutsu sorcerers, such as Choso and Noritoshi Kamo, couldn’t even beat him, it’s safe to say that Uraume is extremely powerful.

The Versatility of Ice Formation

Uraume’s cursed ability is called the Ice Formation. As the name suggests, this ability allows Uraume to create and manipulate ice. He can freely control the size and shape of the ice to suit the needs of the battle. He can use the ice to attack a large number of enemies or focus his attack on a single person. Thanks to this versatile ability, Uraume has tons of options when it comes to subjugating his enemies. This versatility also means that Ice Formation is the perfect ability for defense, especially against physical attacks.

How Uraume Uses Ice Formation for Defense

Whenever an enemy comes rushing towards Uraume, his Ice Formation gives him a wide variety of options on how to defend against such an attack. He can simply cast a block of ice around his hands and use it as a super durable shield. He can create a slab of wall made out of pure ice to defend against a barrage of attacks from multiple enemies. He can also erect a massive wall formation to guard against numerous enemies at the same time. When it comes to defending against physical attacks, Ice Formation is undoubtedly one of the best shields in the series.

Takako Uro’s Sky Manipulation

Jujutsu Kaisen Takako Uro Sky Manipulation

First Appearance

Chapter 176, “Sendai Colony, Part 3”

Air Date

Who is Takako Uro?

Uraume’s Ice Formation may be perfect to defend against physical attacks, but it’s not really a good match-up against attacks that are based on cursed energy, such as Ryu’s Cursed Energy Discharge or Satoru Gojo’s Reversal: Red. For such attacks, there is another sorcerer who has a much more suitable defense mechanism than Uraume. Her name is Takako Uro and her cursed ability is called Sky Manipulation.

Takako is one of the jujutsu sorcerers of the past who was resurrected by Kenjaku to participate in the Culling Game. Her cursed ability, Sky Manipulation, is quite possibly the most fascinating ability in this series. As the name suggests, Sky Manipulation allows Takako to manipulate the sky itself. Thanks to this unique ability, Takako can levitate and even fly around as if the vast sky is her playground.

How Takako Uro uses Sky Manipulation for Defense

The most interesting part of her ability, however, is the ability to bend the sky at her will. Takako can grab, pull, and even fold the sky as if it is made out of a piece of cloth. Grabbing the sky is akin to distorting space itself, which means Takako can freely manipulate everything that enters the surrounding space.

This allows Takako to bend the enemy’s attacks and send them back to its user or any other direction. Since she is bending and distorting the fabric of space itself, it means no kind of attack, be it physical or energy-based, can land on her. Theoretically, Gojo can fire his destructive Reversal: Red at Takako and she can simply grab the space occupied by the red orb and shoot it back to Gojo. So not only does Sky Manipulation provide a perfect defense for Takako, but it is also perfect for a counterattack.

Satoru Gojo’s Infinity

Jujutsu Kaisen Satoru Gojo Infinity

First Appearance

Episode 6, “After the Rain”

Air Date

While Uraume’s Ice Formation and Takako’s Sky Manipulation are certainly two of the best defensive techniques in Jujutsu Kaisen, none of them can compare to Satoru Gojo’s Infinity technique. Before we go any further, let’s talk briefly about Gojo’s Limitless technique first. This one-of-a-kind technique has four main forms: Cursed Technique Reversal: Red, Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue, Hollow Technique: Purple, and Infinity. Red, Blue, and Purple are offensive techniques, while Infinity is a defensive technique.

Infinity is something that’s naturally there. I just bring it into reality.

What is Satoru Gojo’s Infinity?

In the simplest terms, Infinity is a technique that creates an invisible and impenetrable barrier around Satoru Gojo. Any kind of attack, be it physical or based on cursed energy, will be negated upon contact with the Infinity. Because the moment the attacks enter the range of the barrier, they will be stuck in the infinite space between Gojo and the attacks. So technically speaking, it’s not that the attacks are completely stopped, but the movement of the attacks is significantly slowed down as it tries to travel through infinity.

Why Infinity is the Ultimate Defense Technique

Unlike Red, Blue, and Purple, which need a conscious decision to activate, Infinity is a passive ability. This means this absolute barrier is always active as long as Gojo still has a cursed energy running through his body. Gojo can consciously weaken or strengthen his Infinity, either to allow physical contact with his friends or to crush the enemy without even touching them. Other than that, this technique is fully automated and only requires a small amount of cursed energy to maintain. That’s why Gojo’s Infinity is undoubtedly the best defensive technique in Jujutsu Kaisen.
