With Ms. Marvel season 1 concluded and The Marvels hitting theaters recently, Iman Vellani reveals one way she’s been putting her foot on the scale in favor of a potential second season of the Disney Plus show that introduced fans to her Kamala Khan.
Vellani played the titular character in the Disney Plus show Ms. Marvel, which centered around Kamala Khan, an Avengers superfan who becomes super herself when she acquires her own powers. The series was a well-received introduction to a lesser-known character, and rumors soon started flying that there was a big role coming up for the show’s lead, despite her not being sure at the time.
Despite Vellani’s doubts, Ms. Marvel‘s post-credits scene set up The Marvels and established Vellani’s role in the high-budget sequel, which recently premiered. With her obligations to The Marvels over, the star looks forward to more MCU adventures, as she indicated while talking to The Hollywood Reporter. When questioned about her interactions with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, Vellani revealed that she was taking it easy on him to facilitate one major decision. “I’m trying not to give him a hard time right now until I get [Ms. Marvel] season two, and then maybe I’ll email him another 72 questions,” Vellani said. “Yeah, I’m taking it easy. If he says the MCU is [Earth-] 616, I’ll let him believe that.” Vellani also expressed her desire to reunite with her co-stars, and the potential held by a second season.
I am patient, and honestly, I hope all the love that Kamala is getting from this movie inspires people to be more vocal about wanting a season two. I would absolutely love to continue this story, and Kamala and her entire community has so much story left to tell. I want to see Bruno [Matt Lintz] again. I want to see Nakia [Yasmeen Fletcher] again, and that’s just me. So it would be really amazing to have a season two, and there’s so many different directions we can go with it.
Considering that The Marvels box office numbers set a new record-low for the MCU, a second season of the Disney Plus show might be in a shakier place than it was after the series aired initially, as Ms. Marvel’s involvement in what is shaping up to be a flop might not do her any favors when it comes time to decide on renewals. The landscape is already in flux, with Disney changing its streaming strategy and the MCU looking to restructure its shows due to lackluster performance. There’s certainly a case to be made for Vellani’s character being one of the better options currently out there, but there’s no way to know for sure which way the chips will fall.
One hope is that Feige and the other execs at Marvel Studios recognize the outsized antagonism present has nothing to do with Vellani, with Stephen King calling out this attitude towards The Marvels in a social media post addressing the movie’s failure. Fans can only hope that the energetic young lead can win Feige over to her side for another adventure as Ms. Marvel.
Ms. Marvel is available for streaming on Disney Plus.
Ms. Marvel
Kamala, a superhero fan with an imagination–particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel–feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she admires.
