The Sims 4 gives aspiring architects all the tools they need to build houses and mansions from their wildest dreams. While some players prioritize creating unique and diverse Sims or telling powerful stories with the game’s content, many spend the majority of their time in Build & Buy Mode. Players in the community have dedicated their time to creating challenges for builders, but none are quite as interesting as the Inherited Manor Challenge created by Sahm_And_Bean.

Imagine inheriting a majestic manor with a rich history, now weathered and worn, begging for revival. This Sim, faced with the challenge of a lifetime, must not only refurbish the estate but also muster the means to refurbish and replace every piece of furniture in each room of the mansion. Discover the rules of this challenge and the tips and tricks to breathe life back into the estate, one room at a time.

The Backstory

A grandmother hands down the family manor to her granddaughter and gives her a kickstart of 500 simoleons.

This challenge mirrors the storyline of several popular mobile puzzle games like Homescapes, Lily’s Garden, and Merge Mansion, adapted for The Sims 4. An unforeseen life event has left the Sim for this challenge homeless, alone, and completely broke. They turn to their grandmother for help in their time of need. The grandmother is more than happy to help and offers them the old family manor that has been passed down the bloodline for centuries.

Unfortunately, news of this arrangement reaches a distant cousin, who trashes the place and burns the place in a fit of rage and jealousy. The grandmother barely escapes alive but makes sure to hide 500 simoleons and the keys to the house before making her escape to Sulani for some rest and recuperation. The Sim must use this money to help kickstart their refurbishment project.

Players who enjoy building can build the dilapidated mansion for this challenge from scratch if they so choose; however, the creator of this challenge recommends downloading their manor from the gallery – which has already been filled with trash and overgrown with plants. They also recommend starting fires in the house or using Inferno spells to add to the poor state of the manor before the meat of this challenge begins.

Humble Beginnings

Starting with 500 simoleons as a gift from their grandmother, the Sim for this challenge must move into the manor and begin restoring one room at a time. In other words, players cannot begin cleaning some aspects of different rooms at random.

Players will find that 500 simoleons do not get them very far in Buy Mode. Selling furniture items and using money cheats are strictly prohibited, so The Sim will have to find other methods to make money organically in the game. Making money through the lottery, “borrowing” from other sims, and other in-game shenanigans are allowed and are even encouraged by the creator.

The Sim in this challenge does not have to do all the work alone! They may marry another Sim, have children, adopt pets, and befriend other townies. To maintain the sanctity of the challenge and the overall quality of the Sims’ lives, it might be a good idea for players to begin with the kitchen so that they don’t immediately die of starvation. This entails replacing furniture items like the refrigerator, stove, and countertops, as well as clearing the floors of trash and burn residue.

Only after the kitchen is finished can the Sim move on to the next room. The player will know the room is considered complete when the mess has been cleaned up, all appliances are repaired and are in working order, and all furniture has been restored or replaced. The furniture can be replaced with a new version of the same item, but the whole room must be finished before the player makes any style changes or adds any new items to the room.

Completing The Challenge

As a reward for completely refurbishing a room, the player may remove a pesky lot challenge of their choosing. The lot challenges, like Filthy and Gremlins, are designed to make the Sim’s life much more difficult, so removing them will make it easier for the Sim to clean, build skills, and have access to essential resources like food and electricity.

After completing a floor, players can select a lot trait for the manor. Lot traits like Penny Pixies can help the household find more money, while the Homey lot trait can make cooking, handiness, and gardening easier for Sims on the lot.

Players must not only clean and refurbish the interior of the manor but the exterior as well. Be sure to clear the weeds and unkempt bushes along the property. The garden and greenhouse must also be cleaned before the challenge is completed, but they do not count as a completed floor to earn a lot trait. Once the garden has been completed, the Sim will find it much easier to make money. They can also add things like livestock or solar panels to add a nice finishing touch.

Once the entire lot has been cleaned up and restored to its original (or improved) glory, the challenge has officially finished. Carry out the family’s lives and see where their story takes them. Perhaps they find themselves motivated to become houseflippers to continue the challenge, similar to the reality fixer-upper challenges for The Sims 4. Whatever Simmers choose to do, they are encouraged to share their stories and creations on community sites, giving credit to Sahm_And_Bean as the creator of the challenge where it is due.
