Ultros is a psychedelic metroidvania where players wake up stranded in a cosmic uterus holding a demonic, ancient being called The Sarcophagus. Trapped in this loop, players must explore the being, find food, and interact with other stranded inhabitants to escape. Food plays a crucial role in Ultros, helping players heal and gain nutrients to buy upgrades.

Players obtain food by gardening or game hunting (a combat technique that refers to attacking and defeating enemies they find while exploring Ultros). However, not all food is the same since each has specific nutrient values that add to a bar with four separate values for stat increases. Each upgrade requires a specific number of nutrients, and only the best enemy spoils provide the best upgrades while allowing players to unlock more unique abilities and attacks.

How to Get the Best Enemy Spoils in Ultros

To get the best enemy spoils in Ultros, players must mix up their attacks and use combos like juggling, retaliating, and breaking enemy guards to preserve the quality of the meat. The enemies in Ultros are not difficult to defeat, making it easy for players to combine a series of attacks to take them down.

Initially, players only get access to a limited number of abilities and attacks when they run into beasts roaming The Sarcophagus. Attacking these beasts with the available combat skills leaves a bloody pulp that’s ruined (a technique known as pummeling). Pummeling is the sloppy execution of a beast, resulting in it losing some of its potency.

The more you play and progress, the more abilities you learn and unlock, making it easy to get the best quality meat. Using a mix of these combat abilities is the only way to get the best enemy spoils. Once you do, a notification will appear on the screen reading “Perfect Variety.”

The game hunting process in Ultros allows players to carefully slaughter and collect their meat for use in upgrading abilities in the Cortex tree. The Cortex tree features a series of unique combat abilities that players must unlock by eating food with sufficient nutritional value. The best quality meat has the best nutritional value, enabling players to unlock more abilities in a loop.

Any upgrade a player gets from eating the best spoils will disappear upon a loop reset. However, you can choose which abilities or upgrades you’ll retain by collecting a memory lock. This item locks any ability or upgrades you’ve unlocked, ensuring it’s retained with each loop.

All in all, Ultros is a great psychedelic game to dive into if you love trippy games.
