Supermassive’s Until Dawn gained a cult following when it released back in 2015, establishing the developer as a purveyor of campy, thrilling horror games with an emphasis on realism, cinematography, and star power. Around the same time as the release of the Until Dawn remake, which overhauls the original game’s visuals and controls while adding a bit of fresh content, rumors have emerged about a proper sequel.
Horror IP has seemingly never been more prominent in the world of gaming. The likes of Resident Evil have been making a comeback in recent years, and high-profile releases like Alan Wake 2 and the Silent Hill 2 remake continue to prove the value of uncomfortable, eerie, and psychologically unsettling stories. Supermassive Games itself is a testament to this, having essentially built its brand around interactive horror stories that align with the trends established by Until Dawn. With a fresh remake on the shelves and a film adaptation in the works, there’s reason to believe that there’s a market for an Until Dawn 2, though whether it comes to fruition remains to be seen.
There Have Been Rumblings About an Until Dawn Sequel
Recent Until Dawn 2 Rumors
XboxEra co-founder Nick Baker recently tweeted about a possible Until Dawn sequel, saying the following: “Call me selfish [sic] but I’m annoyed I wasn’t able to leak I knew about this. But here’s some more info I heard about this sequel. Apparently it’s Firesprite making it.” Baker’s statements were a response to a Eurogamer article discussing the possibility of a new Until Dawn game, speculating about the sequel based on changes introduced in the game’s remake.
The comment about Firesprite being behind the Until Dawn sequel is particularly interesting and rich for analysis. Rumors about Until Dawn 2 are nothing new, but linking the project to Firesprite offers a link to some concrete information: Firesprite is reportedly working on a horror game, which Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has suggested could be a new entry in an existing series. With Firesprite being a Sony-owned studio, and with Sony’s IP portfolio being notably lean when it comes to horror, there’s enough evidence to link Firesprite and Until Dawn 2, as Sony controls the rights to the franchise.
Of course, it should go without saying that any and all rumors about Until Dawn 2 should be taken with a grain of salt, even if they are coming from reputable sources. One of the most salient pieces of industry news to keep in mind with all this information is the current state of Firesprite as a developer: Firesprite’s Twisted Metal project was reportedly canceled, and the company was on the receiving end of mass layoffs earlier this year. With so much tumult, it’s possible that the state of an Until Dawn sequel from the studio could be problematic, assuming that it was in development in the first place.
Until Dawn
technically already has a sequel known as
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
, though it’s a VR rail-shooter that is more of a novelty or spin-off game than a proper follow-up.
Until Dawn 2 Teased With the Remake’s New Endings
The most compelling evidence in support of Until Dawn 2 may not be news from industry insiders, but the groundwork laid by new content in the remake. While none of the original game’s endings leave much room for a sequel, the remake includes new epilogues that tease the continuation of Josh’s and Sam’s stories. These could have been included for the purpose of making a more conclusive and satisfying ending, but it’s also possible that they are setting the foundation for a new story in the Until Dawn canon. Only time will tell if Sony is indeed pursuing a full-fledged sequel, spin-off, or other Until Dawn project.
