Highlights

  • Battlefield 2042 had a rocky start but improved over time, offering free seasonal updates and new content to fans.
  • The game’s 7th season will be its last, but it will still receive balancing patches and updates with past seasonal events.
  • A new Halloween event is coming, offering exclusive rewards, new gear, and weekly missions to players in a four-week event.

Looking back on the last few years, Battlefield 2042‘s legacy is still a mixed one. Hitting store shelves in 2021, Battlefield 2042 was met with an infamously poor reception from both fans and critics alike, with many criticizing the game’s Specialist system, its overly large maps, and its wealth of technical issues at launch. But over time, Battlefield 2042 became much more of the game fans wanted it to be, with its seasonal approach adding plenty of new content to the game for no additional cost.

But Battlefield 2042‘s time has finally come to an end. Back in April, EA announced that Battlefield 2042‘s 7th season would be its last and that the game’s various development teams would be switching their focus to the next entry in the franchise. That being said, Battlefield 2042 is still set to receive regular balancing patches and updates over the next few months, some of which will bring back past seasonal events, and some of which will even add some new content to the game. One such update will be Battlefield 2042‘s 2024 Halloween event.

Delta Force: Hawk Ops Could Give Battlefield A Run For Its Money

After getting my hands on the alpha test, I can safely say that Delta Force: Hawk Ops can compete with the Battlefield franchise. It’s implements BF2042’s Specialists in a way that feels more intuitive and natural, and the gunplay isn’t bad at all either. While I still hope Battlefield can return to its old days, Delta Force: Hawk Ops will likely be my go-to large-scale FPS game until then.

What Fans Can Expect to See in Battlefield 2042’s Next Halloween Event

What’s Already Been Confirmed for Battlefield 2042’s Next Halloween Event

In its recent update on Battlefield 2042‘s website titled “The Journey of Battlefield 2042 Continues,” EA confirmed that the game will receive a “New Halloween Event” later this year. Very little has been officially confirmed about this Halloween event, but based on this title alone, it seems as though fans are going to get some type of new content, though it’s unclear just what this is or how extensive the offerings will be.

In the same roadmap image, EA states that this new Halloween event will allow players to earn “exclusive new rewards,” and that “new gear,” and “weekly missions” will be major parts of the upcoming event. Further down the blog post, EA sheds a bit more light on the structure of Battlefield 2042‘s next Halloween event. The blog post confirms that the event will last four weeks and that it’ll offer “progression via an event pass” that includes both free and premium tiers, and contains “new cosmetics and more.”

What Fans Could See From Battlefield 2042’s Next Halloween Event

Currently, those are the only confirmed details regarding Battlefield 2042‘s next Halloween event, though there’s a lot fans can speculate on given the nature of the game’s last Halloween offering. Released on October 31 2023, Battlefield 2042‘s Dark Protocol event was one of the game’s best. Themed around a rogue AI breaking containment, Dark Protocol introduced a limited-time 12v12 Killswitch mode, where players would capture an AI node, create an army of horrifyingly deadpan synthetic soldiers called Geists, and unleash them on the opposing team. This event came with a slew of exclusive cosmetic rewards as well, though its Killswitch mode was the biggest highlight.

There’s a possibility that Battlefield 2042‘s next Halloween event repurposes Dark Protocol’s Killswitch game mode, albeit with a few tweaks to make it feel like a “new experience.” Hopefully, whatever this year’s Halloween event brings can live up to the legacy left by Battlefield 2042‘s Dark Protocol.
