Highlights

  • Wyll Ravengard may initially be seen as a boring and useless character, but his compelling storyline, including his pact with a devil and quest to rescue his father, adds depth and complexity to his character.
  • Wyll’s powerful magical abilities, such as Eldritch Blast and Fireball, make him a valuable asset in combat and can greatly aid the player, especially on Tactical difficulty.
  • While Wyll’s romance may not have as many scenes or intimate moments as other companions, his sweet and wholesome love affair, as well as his strong bond with Karlach, make him a considerate and compassionate companion that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has a plethora of interesting and fun characters. There’s the Vampire Astarion, who has a deep and emotional story, there’s the Tiefling Karlach, who cannot touch people without burning them, and there’s Gale, who has an arcane hunger that forces him to consume magical items, as well as other companions with their unique stories and personalities. All the characters and companions have their own charm and the majority of them are loved by the fans of Baldur’s Gate 3.

There is one companion in particular who seems to have drawn the short straw when it comes to impressing the fans, and that companion is Baldur’s Gate 3’s resident Warlock Wyll Ravengard. The majority of fans easily disregard Wyll and may think of him as a boring and useless character, with some players avoiding him altogether. At a glance, Wyll can look like an average handsome man who doesn’t offer much, but if the player gives him a chance, levels up his character, and plays through his story, they’ll realize there is much more to BG3‘s Wyll Ravengard than meets the eye.

Why Fans Shouldn’t Sleep on Wyll

Compelling Storyline

There is a lot of depth to Wyll beyond being good and self-sacrificial. When he was seventeen, he chose to trade his soul in a pact with a devil called Mizora to gain the necessary powers to defend his city and was subsequently banished by his father for this. He then went on to adopt the title the Blade of Frontiers and began hunting down demons for his patron Mizora. Wyll is willing to face the consequences of breaching his contract when he believes he has done the right thing, which is shown when he spares BG3‘s Karlach and is punished by Mizora to spend the rest of his life as a devil, unless the player goes through a loophole that allows Wyll to stay human and Karlach to stay alive. He will sometimes show his devious side if he is in the players party, and will occasionally tease Astarion for being a vampire.

The majority of Wyll’s storyline is about him overcoming the fact that he’s now a devil or learning from his mistake with Karlach’s death while attempting to rescue his father Duke Ulder Ravengard from the enemy and breaking out of his pact with Mizora. However, near the end of his storyline, he will be given an ultimatum: save his father or be released from his pact. Mizora tells him he can’t have both, though there is another loophole where the player can search for Wyll’s father after breaking the pact with no consequences other than a disappointed Mizora and losing the chance to romance her in Baldur’s Gate 3. At the culmination of his story, Wyll’s father tries to give him the title of Duke, but if given the choice, he will decline and rename his title to The Blade of Avernus.

Eldritch Blast & Other Powerful Skills

A warlock’s abilities can be by far the most powerful. Wyll isn’t the best at fighting with ranged weapons, but he is exceptional with magic, especially with Eldritch Blasts, which he will have when he is first recruited. Playing on Tactical difficulty becomes much easier with Wyll in the party because his Eldritch Blasts don’t spend any spell slots, and they can do over 10 points of damage. When he levels up, his Eldritch Blast improves, and he unlocks a vast majority of powerful spells, such as the Fireball, which can do more than 40 points of damage to any enemy in the blast radius.

Wyll’s Romance

Wyll’s romance is a sweet and wholesome love affair. However, there are only two scenes in his romance and there is no opportunity to sleep with him, unlike the romances for other BG3 companions. Nevertheless, his two romance scenes are still very wholesome. His Act 2 scene involves him dancing with the player and his Act 3 scene is of him proposing marriage to the player with an acorn.

Wyll and Karlach

Out of all the companions in Baldur’s Gate 3, Wyll is the only one who is willing to save Karlach from dying at the end of the game. From wanting to kill her to wanting to protect her and doing all he can to allow her to live, they share a unique bond. He knows that she doesn’t want to return to Avernus even if it means that she’ll be able to live. She doesn’t want to be alone again, so he insists on going with her. This makes a perfect end to Wyll’s story and makes him one of the most considerate companions. From his personality to his powerful abilities, Wyll is certainly a companion that shouldn’t be slept on.
