  • Rarest mounts in Classic WoW like Fluorescent Green Mechanostrider are sought after by collectors and players alike.
  • Frostwolf Howler and Stormpike Battle Charger require reaching exalted PvP status and 640 Gold.
  • Original epic mounts from 2004 required 1,000 Gold, making them the rarest in the game’s history.

World of Warcraft has been around since 2004, and the game has always had a “Classic era.” Whether players are referring to the modern Classical realms that let players relive the good old days or they are talking about the good old days themselves, the classical portion of WoW’s life is one for the history books of video games.

The game has a pretty big collector’s market with players wanting to collect transmogs, mounts, pets, and so much more. However, the game’s biggest collector’s market is probably the one for mounts. Here’s a breakdown of the mounts that are the rarest in the Classic era of the game (both back in 2004 and in the modern Classic version).

5 The Frostwolf Howler / Stormpike Battle Charger

Get Exalted With Your Faction’s PvP Rep

While a decent percentage of players may have this mount on retail, playing on Classic is a whole different story. The mount is only available to players who have reached exalted status with their faction’s PvP representative within the Alterac Mountains. Once they have reached exalted, they will need to pay 640 Gold, a pretty hefty sum, in order to obtain the mount for their respective faction. The Horde players would get The Frostwolf Howler and Alliance players got the Stormpike Battle Charger.

While getting everything that is needed and obtaining the mount may not be too terribly difficult in today’s version of the game, it certainly wasn’t an easy feat for players during the Classic era or those playing on Classic realms. Instead, these players would have to not only grind the reputation, but also grind the Gold in order to obtain it. Today, players can get that much Gold in just a few minutes of playing the game, but back then, that would take countless hours of grinding to get.

The Grind Is Difficult

These mounts are some of the rarest mounts due to their difficulty. Like the PvP mounts before them, the requirements may seem like nothing now, but they were extremely convoluted back in the Classic era of the game. Players would need to obtain a PvP Rank of 11 and then purchase them from their faction’s representative within the Alterac Valley PvP area. They used to cost 100 Gold, which is a pretty decent size of change for a player back then.

World Of Warcraft Classic: 6 Hidden Quests And How To Find Them

World of Warcraft Classic has several hidden quests for curious players to discover.

The real reason that these are so rare in the Classic era of the game is the fact that grinding for PvP levels was so difficult to do. On top of that, each Race had its own mount, meaning there were quite a few of these mounts to pick from. Finally, the Gold itself was a pretty difficult thing to obtain. While Gold isn’t too terribly hard to find now, it was a rare commodity back then.

3 Rivendare’s Deathcharger

One Of The Lowest Drop Rates Ever

Deathcharger_Baron-rivendare, Stratholme

Rivendare’s Deathcharger doesn’t look like much; after all, it looks almost identical to all the Skeletal Horses available via Under City. However, this mount allowed anyone to ride one of the Skeletal Horse mounts, even Alliance players. Due to the fact that it was one of the only skeletal mounts in Classic WoW, and it allowed anyone to ride it, this was one of the mounts that everyone wanted to get at one point or another. Unfortunately, it was (and still is) a pretty rare mount in the game.

The mount will drop from a boss in the Stratholme raid known as Baron Rivendare. While this boss is pretty easy to get to and take down during raids, it is rare that he drops the mount. In fact, the mount drops less than 0.1% of the time, and adding the number of players in a raid, it has one of the lowest drop rates of any mount, making it a rare one. Less than 1% of players have this mount, and considering the odds of obtaining it, that doesn’t come as too much of a shocking statistic.

2 Black Qiraji Battle Tank

If Impossible Was A Mount

In order to obtain this mount, players basically had to do an impossible challenge. The Temple of Ahn’Qiraj and Ruins of Ahn’Qiraj were added to the game during Classic WoW (and will be added to the current Classic version in Phase 5 of Season of Discovery). To reach these areas, players had to obtain a large amount of resources and work together (Alliance and Horde) to open the Gate of Ahn’Qiraj. Considering this is the longest questline in the entirety of the game, it is no shock that most players never got to see the gates open.

Once players had completed the questline and obtained the Scepter of the Shifting Sands, they would be able to complete the mission and obtain this amazing mount. However, this mount was only available during a 10-hour window, so if you missed that time, you missed the mount entirely. Any player on the server could initiate the 10-hour window, meaning it was very unlikely that players would know when it would happen. After those 10 hours, the rewards from the quest would never be available on that server again. Considering how hard it is to get and time it right so that you make it during that window of time, most players didn’t get the mount.

1 The Original Epic Mounts

Required 1,000 Gold Back In 2004

The original epic mounts are the rarest mounts from WoW Classic and from the entire game franchise, even to this day. These mounts were obtainable via vendors prior to Patch 1.4 back in 2005. The mounts could be purchased for 1,000 Gold and used once players reached level 60, making them extremely difficult to obtain. During those days, very few players were able to obtain 1,000 Gold, let alone have it lying around to spend on a mount. This is the main reason they are so rare, but it isn’t the only reason.

After Patch 1.4, these mounts were replaced with the epic mounts that players still have today. Once the patch happened, players with these original mounts could trade them in for the new mounts with armor, or they could keep them. Considering very few players had them to begin with, and then some traded them in for the armored versions, these original versions are actually the rarest mounts in the entire game, and will more than likely continue to be throughout the remained of the game’s lifetime.
