A World of Warcraft fan discovers an unexpected detail about a new NPC from Classic Season of Discovery that connects them to Dragonflight.

Highlights

  • Classic Season of Discovery introduces the Battle for Ashenvale PvP event, which includes new NPC lieutenants, including Larodar from Dragonflight, making a clever connection between Classic and retail WoW.
  • Larodar, corrupted by the Druids of the Flame, is a boss from Amirdrassil in Dragonflight, and his appearance in Battle for Ashenvale is a nod to Warcraft 3 where players could recruit him as a hero for the Night Elf faction.
  • Classic Season of Mastery developers went far back in history by using random Warcraft 3 hero names for the new NPCs, and fans appreciate the continuity in connecting Classic and retail Warcraft’s rich history.

A World of Warcraft fan recently pointed out that one of the lieutenants found in the Battle for Ashenvale PvP event in Classic Season of Discovery is Larodar, a raid boss from Amirdrassil in Dragonflight. This new NPC makes a clever connection between Classic and retail World of Warcraft, while also being a throwback to Warcraft 3.

The Season of Discovery is a World of Warcraft Classic experience that introduces several new things to the retro servers. One of these features is the Battle for Ashenvale–a new WoW Classic PvPvE event that gives reputation with the Warsong Gulch factions and offers unique rewards, including a mount players can use at level 25.

World of Warcraft Classic Reduces Rune Reputation Requirements in Season of Discovery, But There’s a Catch

World of Warcraft Classic reduces the reputation required to purchase certain Runes for each class, but there’s a catch players should know about.

While participating in the Battle for Ashenvale, World of Warcraft fan and content creator MrGM noticed a fun connection to Dragonflight and shared it on his personal Twitter. During the event, the Alliance and Horde each have three lieutenants and a Leader that the enemy force must defeat to win. One of the Alliance lieutenants is a Keeper of the Grove named Larodar–a name Dragonflight players may recognize as one of the bosses from Amirdrassil, the Dream’s Hope. Corrupted by the Druids of the Flame, Larodar is the fifth boss players face during the raid.

While Larodar had never appeared in WoW before Dragonflight, some players might recognize his name from even earlier in Warcraft history. Larodar was one of the random names players could get when recruiting Keeper of the Grove heroes while playing the Night Elf faction in Warcraft 3. In fact, all the lieutenants and leaders were taken from random Warcraft 3 hero names, proving the Classic Season of Mastery developers went far back in history to create these new NPCs–but only Larodar has appeared elsewhere in World of Warcraft before.

Fans got a kick out of this tie between Classic and retail World of Warcraft. Most agree the continuity made by introducing Larodar to Classic was a clever move, and that using old random hero names for the Battle for Ashenvale bosses was a stroke of genius. They also appreciated the connection with Dragonflight, and the fact that its own development team looked at the franchise’s history to create Larodar in the first place. While he may not drop the Hearthstone toy he does in Dragonflight, Horde players can defeat Larodar in a very different way in Classic, while Alliance players can try to protect him from his grim fate.
