Highlights
- World of Warcraft players can unlock class-restricted transmogs on any character in Patch 10.0.5 this autumn.
- Completing quests in Patch 11.0.5 unlocks all gear appearances, not just ones characters can equip.
- Players no longer need to redo quests multiple times to collect all transmogs, a huge win for fans.
World of Warcraft is making some improvements to the Warbands transmog collection process soon, including the ability to learn class-restricted transmogs on any character, and more broad, retroactive gear appearance unlocks when completing quests. These improvements are expected to arrive in World of Warcraft during The War Within Patch 10.0.5, currently expected this autumn.
During the beta for The War Within, players noticed completing quests unlocked the transmog appearances for every type of gear obtainable as a reward, even for armor and weapon types the character couldn’t use. This corroborated information associate game director Morgan Day shared during pre-expansion interviews, which suggested that not only would fans unlock transmogs in this way, but that characters would learn other unearned appearances from previously-completed quests retroactively. However, when Warbands arrived in the WoW: The War Within Pre-Patch, these functions were nowhere to be found.

World of Warcraft Reveals 11.0.2 Patch Notes
Blizzard releases the patch notes for World of Warcraft’s 11.0.2 update, which brings class changes and UI enhancements across the board.
Initially, World of Warcraft developer Yryadorne confirmed the transmog unlocking from the beta was an unintended feature, stating it was likely a bug during the development phase. Then, a few days later, Yryadorne edited their post on the WoW forum, linking to a new blog that confirmed World of Warcraft would be turning this apparent bug into a feature after all, along with the ability to freely unlock class-restricted gear transmogs, such as tier sets from legacy raids. These changes are expected to arrive in Patch 11.0.5, a few months after The War Within releases.
Transmog Unlock Improvements Coming to WoW: The War Within
- Class-restricted gear appearances, such as legacy tier sets in World of Warcraft, can be learned by any character.
- All quest reward gear appearances will be learned, regardless of whether the class can see or choose them.
- Retroactive quest reward transmog unlocks for any content that has been completed once before, learned upon first login.
- Arriving in Patch 11.0.5, expected in October or November.
Previously, characters only unlock quest reward appearances for all items they can equip, regardless of the actual item they choose for the reward. Since there are four types of armor in the game – cloth, leather, mail, and plate – fans would have needed to complete almost every quest in World of Warcraft four times in order to get all the transmogs. With this change, players will only need to do so once – and they won’t have to go back and re-do questlines they’ve already completed to get their appearances.
Needless to say, fans are overjoyed to see World of Warcraft make this change. Transmog collection is a huge part of the game for tons of players, many of whom were disappointed to learn Blizzard seemingly removed what was an amazing feature for a short while. The fact that World of Warcraft listened to fan feedback and made this change after all is a huge win for players and developers alike.
