The final chapter of the Tyr storyline in World of Warcraft features a cameo from Runas, a beloved character from the Legion expansion. After breaking the hearts of many with Runas over seven years ago, World of Warcraft has done so once more by having him appear during the questline.
In Dragonflight, World of Warcraft introduced the Silver Purpose, a sidestory centered around the resurrection of Keeper Tyr, the late Titan watcher responsible for empowering the Dragonflights. During the final arc of the questline from Patch 10.2, World of Warcraft players go to an alternate universe version of Suramar to retrieve an artifact to accomplish this goal.
While there, some keen-eyed players noticed a familiar face they never expected to see. Runas the Bright, a past version of the beloved World of Warcraft: Legion NPC, appears near a stack of books as players make their way through the area. When spoken to, Runas says he does not recognize the character, but can sense a connection beyond his understanding before wishing the player well. Given how impactful Runas’ story was in Legion, players who discovered him here were shocked and delighted.
Better known as Runas the Shamed, this Nightbourne’s story was one of the most emotional moments during Legion. The shady Nightfallen aids players during the storyline of Aszuna, but near the end of the quests, he succumbs to his mana starvation after an act of heroism and becomes a mindless Withered. Runas’ tragic fate has resonated with fans and developers alike for years, with his name still being evoked in recent World of Warcraft interviews, and tributes to him showing up in places like the Blue Dragon questline in Dragonflight.
Players who have stumbled upon this particular Legion Easter egg were beside themselves to see their old friend. He may not be their Runas, but seeing the beloved Nightbourne flourishing and happy, untouched by the Nightfallen affliction that took his mind, brought many fans to the brink of tears. Though likely little more than a cameo appearance, most agree it is nice to see that World of Warcraft hasn’t forgotten Runas.
Patch 10.2, Seeds of Renewal, has had a lot of cameos in it. During the post-raid epilogue, some players have found characters from as far back in World of Warcraft history as vanilla. Considering what they’ve seen of The War Within so far, players should expect World of Warcraft to pull out plenty more surprising guest appearances throughout the Worldsoul Saga.
