Microsoft has released a new Xbox update for Alpha testers that enhances customization options for players’ gamerpics and background pictures. Going forward, players will have even more control over how they represent themselves on Xbox consoles.

Xbox backgrounds and gamerpics have long been a staple of the console’s profile features, allowing players to select pictures to show next to their Gamertag. Players can either select a custom image, take a picture of their Xbox avatar, or choose from pre-made options to represent themselves online across the Xbox network. This feature is crucial to customizing one’s profile, and Microsoft has periodically updated the backgrounds and gamerpics features with better resolution and more customization tools, even remaking some old-school Xbox 360 gamerpics for newer consoles.

Xbox Game Pass Game Update Adds Local Co-Op

A popular Xbox Game Pass title with ‘Overwhelmingly Positive’ Steam reviews introduces local co-op as part of its latest update.

Microsoft released a new Xbox Update Preview to the Alpha ring, adding a variety of features for testers to try out before making them accessible to all Xbox players. In this new update, Xbox improved the process of selecting and editing custom images for Home backgrounds and gamerpics. On top of adding better instructions for how to use the different Xbox backgrounds and gamerpics options, Microsoft lowered the image size requirements for background images and gamerpics. According to Xbox engineering lead Eden Marie, this update aims to allow players to create gamerpics directly from screenshots and achievement art, no matter the initial image resolution. This new Xbox gamerpic feature is expected to roll out to all players over the coming months.

In addition to these additional options for gamerpics, the latest Xbox Update Preview brings various other enhancements to improve the user experience. The update includes an option to receive Store notifications for specific deals and a user-guided self-calibration tool for controller triggers in addition to the thumbstick recalibration tool launched earlier this year, as well as various updates to properly reflect local languages across the console. These changes are currently limited to Alpha testers in the Xbox Insider Program, with a full rollout anticipated in the near future.

Beyond this update to the gamerpic feature, Xbox recently released three new iterations of its Xbox Series X/S consoles, offering a disc-free option, more storage, and a new Galaxy Black special edition system. Fans are also hoping for more news regarding the next Xbox console, with rumors suggesting a dedicated AI chip with native support for Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant, better graphics, and even the possibility that Xbox’s upcoming console will be a handheld device.
