Indie hit Brotato has added a local co-op mode. This big new feature is currently only supported by select versions of the game, including the ones available via Xbox Game Pass.

Made by French indie developer Thomas Gervraud, Brotato is a popular shoot-em-up with a top-down perspective and roguelite progression mechanics. It originally debuted as a Steam Early Access title in September 2022 before receiving a full-fledged release in June of the following year. As of October 2024, the game boasts “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Valve’s storefront, based on over 77,000 player impressions. Brotato has been part of the Xbox Game Pass library since January 2024.

Best Local Co-Op & Split-Screen Games On Xbox Game Pass

For those looking for couch co-op fun while exploring the Xbox Game Pass library, here are some of the best split-screen games available.

The hit roguelite has now gotten even better with the release of its local co-op mode, which offers cooperative multiplayer experiences for up to four players. The feature is currently available on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This goes for both its Steam and Microsoft Store versions, including the editions available to Xbox Game Pass members. Since Brotato wasn’t a day-one release on Microsoft’s subscription service, it’s available across all of its tiers except XGP Core.

Brotato’s Local Co-Op Also Coming to PlayStation and Switch

Brotato‘s local co-op mode is entirely free. In a recent blog post, publisher Blobfish said that the newly introduced feature is also planned to roll out to other versions of the game. This suggests that local co-op is at the very least coming to the PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Although Brotato has also been available on mobile since early 2023, it’s currently unclear whether its Android and iOS ports are in line to receive local multiplayer as well.

In the meantime, Blobfish has confirmed that Brotato‘s local co-op is compatible with Steam Remote Play Together, a self-explanatory feature designed for mimicking local multiplayer online. Only one person in a group of up to four people needs to own Brotato for this to work. That said, a decent connection is obviously a prerequisite for this makeshift online multiplayer experience to function as intended. The co-op update also includes four new characters, five more weapons, and no fewer than 15 additional items, as well as an accessibility option for retrying failed enemy waves. Some extra music is part of the package as well.

The launch of the free co-op update coincides with the arrival of Brotato: Abyssal Terrors. Priced at $3.99, the game’s first-ever DLC pack introduces 14 new characters, 16 new weapons, over 30 additional items, and even more music tracks. Curse and charm mechanics are also part of the paid DLC, further deepening Brotato‘s gameplay loop.
