Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Player Builds Incredibly Accurate Mosquito in the Game

A dedicated The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom player has constructed a giant mosquito sculpture using the in-game tools. The highly accurate-looking insect can even fly, and now terrorizes the skies of Hyrule in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was impressive in its own right, Tears of the Kingdom easily supplants it as one of the best Switch open world games. This is thanks in part to the additional sky islands and underground areas added above and below Hyrule, but also to the versatility and depth of the Ultrahand system, which allows Link to essentially “glue together” items and objects to create unique functional machines and contraptions to surmount any obstacle or express any whim.

The latest machine to enter the world of Tears of the Kingdom comes from kmarkow, a user in the game’s Hyrule Engineering Reddit community. They shared their “Big Mosquito” creation, showing off a huge flying bug the size of a buildable Tarrey Town house, complete with an accurate mosquito shape and a pair of wings capable of flight.

Tears of the Kingdom Giant Mosquito Can Fly Through Hyrule’s Skies

According to kmarkow, the inspiration for the flying mosquito build came from someone’s suggestion to acquire an unusual building material: A leg from the Marbled Gohma, the spider-like boss of the Tears of the Kingdom Fire Temple. Upon acquiring the leg, kmarkow was reminded of a mosquito’s head, and was so inspired to build a big mosquito to match its scale.

The Marbled Gohma leg forms the head and thorax of the mosquito, while a large piece of rock and Colgera jaws form the abdomen and legs, respectively. A Gnarled Long Stick forms the mosquito’s proboscis, while the wings are formed from four elevator railings plundered from the Right Leg Depot dungeon. The Right Leg Depot elevator railings are popular for use in Tears of the Kingdom contraptions, thanks to their regular size, light weight, and Zonai material characteristics.

Kmarkow’s mosquito would be nothing more than a mere statue on the ground if not for its ability to fly, though. To achieve that feat, they used a set of propellers attached to a motor base, but hid the propellers slightly using an advanced technique called Q-linking that allows machine parts to be connected to each other without having to maintain physical contact. As a result, the mosquito can hover and fly without the propellers providing lift and thrust being immediately visible. The community reacted with praise, complimenting kmarkow’s success while jokingly proclaiming their disgust at seeing the giant mosquito menacing Hyrule while piloted by Link onscreen.
