The Other Path to Mohgwyn Palace
Elden Ring features an enormous number of locales to explore, from vast underground Catacombs to windswept hilltop castles. Of these countless regions to explore, Mohgwyn Palace is one of the best hidden. In order for Elden Ring players to reach Mohgwyn Palace, they must acquire a special item from an easily missed NPC by progressing that NPC’s questline.
Updated August 23rd, 2023: It’s entirely possible for players to make their way to Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring without having to deal with White-Faced Varre or his questline. As players make their way through the Lands Between, they’ll be able to find an area known as the Consecrated Snowfields. By searching through the low-visibility area, players can eventually come across a strange portal that will take them all the way to Mohgwyn Palace. To better showcase how players can find Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring by simply walking there, the following guide has been updatedwith a video.
Updated June 14th, 2024 by Thomas Hawkins: With the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on the horizon, getting to Mohgwyn Palace has become a crucial step in players’ preparations. This guide has, therefore, been updated with additional information and details on how to reach the Lord of Blood’s Domain, along with videos showing both paths to Mohgwyn Palace. This should make it easier to track down Mohg and prepare for the upcoming DLC.
White-Faced Varre
Despite its secrecy, the path to Mohgwyn Palace begins almost immediately after beginning the game. Players exiting the tutorial area will almost certainly notice the mysterious NPC “White-Faced Varre,” who offers advice to players regarding the Guidance of Grace and the path to Stormveil Castle .
Returning to Varre’s spot at “The First Step” Site of Lost Grace after defeating Godrick the Grafted and visiting the Two-Fingers at Roundtable Hold will reveal he has vanished, leaving behind a short message. This message suggests looking for him at the Rose Church, which can be found east of Raya Lucaria, in Liurnia.
The Rose Church
Found within the swamps in Liurna of the Lakes, the Rose Church is a ruined church that appears to be flooded with blood. Varre can be found once more outside the church, where he offers Elden Ring players a gruesome but valuable item. The Festering Bloody Finger he gives the player can be used to invade the worlds of other players and attempt to kill them for runes and Rune Arc and must be used at least three times to trigger the next stage of Varre’s story.
Return to Varre after invading another player three times (It doesn’t matter if the player succeeds or fails) and he will offer to anoint the player as a “knight to serve Luminary Mohg, the Lord of Blood, and establish a new dynasty.” Varre will then ask players to perform an additional task, soaking a piece of cloth called the “ Lord of Blood’s Favor ” in blood from a Finger Maiden.
It is also possible to progress Varre’s Questline after he gives you the Festering Bloody Finger by traveling to Writheblood Ruins. This area in Altus Plateau contains an Invasion Sign, which allows you to invade “Magnus the Beast Claw.” Defeating Magnus counts as all three invasions required to progress Varre’s Quest, and also allows you to snag the “Great Stars” weapon. The accompanying guide video for Varre’s Quest uses this method.
The Church of Inhibition & Chapel of Anticipation
The Church of Inhibition, located in the North-East of Liurna of the Lakes, contains the body of a Finger Maiden whose blood can be used to soak the favor and complete Varre’s request. This is likely the simpler of the two methods described here, as it simply requires traveling across the region where the Rose Church is. The Church of Inhibition is guarded by Festering Fingerprint Vyke, a dangerous invader who uses Frenzied Flame Incantations and a Spear to attack. He can be pretty dangerous, but his Incantations have a noticeable wind-up that can be used to predict and dodge them.
Alternatively, players can head to the Four Belfries in the west of Liurna of the Lakes and activate the portal beneath the second Belfry, which allows players to return to the Chapel of Anticipation from the beginning of the game. After getting revenge on the Grafted Scion, players can return to the Chapel where they first loaded into the game and soak the cloth using the corpse of the Maiden within. After soaking the cloth and returning to Varre, exhausting his dialog will cause him to give the player the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which can be used from the inventory to teleport to Mohgwyn Palace.
The Other Path to Mohgwyn Palace
It is also possible to travel to Mohgwyn Palace without using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, though doing so requires searching for a hidden portal in the Consecrated Snowfields. This portal can be found hidden to the Northwest of the Yelough Anix Tunnel and will take players to Mohgwyn Palace, in its hidden location beneath Caelid.
An easy way to track down this path to Mohgwyn Palace is by heading south-west from the Ordina, Liturgical Town Site of Grace (heading more west than south, to be specific). As you draw closer to the Yelough Anix Ruins you’ll draw the ire of a Sanguine Noble. This invader dual-wields Reduvia knives and can quickly inflict hemorrhage/bleed if you aren’t careful. Watch their movements carefully so they don’t catch you off-guard with their ranged blood blades. After defeating the Sanguine Noble, continue heading south-west to find the portal leading to Mohgwyn Palace. Unlike other portals in the game, this one is covered in blood with a noticeable blood pool beneath it. Unlike the Pureblood Knight Medallion, this portal will drop players into a cave near the Blood Swamp. This means that you’ll have to travel through the swamp to reach the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum and the Demigod waiting within.
