Screen adaptations of video games were once deemed certain failures, but not anymore.
In an interview with The Guardian, FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki confirmed interest in adapting Elden Ring‘s story into another medium. He stated that he is willing to license the game for a future adaptation, but only if they find a “very strong partner” to take on the project. Miyazaki explained that neither he nor his company are equipped to produce something so different and would prefer not to play a major role in the production if it ever happens.
“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”
Miyazaki’s revelation is not surprising, given previous speculations about expanding Elden Ring‘s universe. Back in 2021, it was announced that there were plans to take Elden Ring into “a variety of other areas,” which many fans interpreted as a hint at a potential movie or TV adaptation. While these claims were not clarified at the time, Miyazaki’s recent confirmation adds significant weight to the idea. He expressed a willingness to license his work for an adaptation, but he emphasized that it must live up to the game’s name, requiring a very strong partner and a capable team to bring the project to fruition. Miyazaki explained that any such project would necessitate building a lot of trust and reaching agreements on the creative direction to ensure the adaptation is faithful and of high quality. He also mentioned a crucial condition: neither he nor FromSoftware would be heavily involved in the project. This might be surprising, but it is because they lack the expertise to create something in a different medium that is not video games. Miyazaki’s stance is clear; while he is open to sharing the rights to his work, he wants to ensure that the adaptation is handled by those with the appropriate skills and vision to do it justice.
In recent years, video game adaptations – whether in the form of movies or TV series – have become a notable trend, with many achieving significant success. Just look at examples like The Last of Us, Fallout, and Halo, which have all been well-received and popular. Now, some of the most iconic games are joining this trend. There is already been confirmation of an adaptation for The Legend of Zelda, although updates have been sparse since the announcement. Even God of War is reportedly getting its own adaptation, and it is likely that more popular games will follow suit. An Elden Ring movie would undoubtedly be one of the most challenging projects to undertake. The game’s complexity and rich, immersive settings make it an ambitious choice for any production company. Adapting such an iconic game would require not only technical expertise but also a profound understanding of the source material to do it justice. For Elden Ring to transition successfully to the big screen, it would necessitate a partnership with a top-tier company capable of capturing the essence of the game. While the task is daunting, the potential for creating an extraordinary movie is immense, and fans are eagerly awaiting any developments on this front.
