Destiny 2: 8 Characters From The Lore That Need To Appear In-Game

As the Destiny franchise has been going for a decade at this point, a whole host of characters have appeared in-game, with varying levels of importance. Destiny 2 introduces many more through lore entries, and a majority of these characters have never had a physical appearance, are merely mentioned, and are left cloaked in mystery.

With The Final Shape, players finally meet Micah-10 and Targe, two characters mentioned previously in the lore yet never seen on screen before, both of which were received with relative praise. The characters listed below are a fraction of those who deserve the Micah-10 treatment and really should make an in-game appearance.

8 Shiro-4

A Vanguard Scout Who Hasn’t Been Seen Since the SIVA Crisis

Shiro-4 has previously appeared in a Destiny game, so starting this list off with this entry is kind of cheating. However, Shiro-4 is a fan-favorite character and is regarded by the Vanguard as one of their most trusted scouts. In his first appearance, Shiro acted as a vendor in the Iron Temple in the Rise of Iron DLC for Destiny.

Despite the fact that Shiro’s signature weapon, Trespasser, has returned to Destiny 2, the character himself has been left in the past, forgotten by the developers but not the fans. Many have been asking on social media for years for Bungie to bring Shiro back to the game, feeling he was done dirty by the devs in the lack of references towards him with the return of Trespasser.

7 Toland, The Shattered

A Guardian Now Lost In The Ascendant Realm

Toland, the Shattered was a member of Eris Morn’s fireteam that first ventured into the Hellmouth to face Crota, Son of Oryx. As most guardians will be aware, Eris was the only survivor of this event. However, Toland is technically not dead. If the player explores the Dreaming City, specifically the ascendant challenges and the Shattered Throne dungeon, they will stumble across these small blights through which Toland will contact them.

Toland’s fate is something akin to death, being stranded somewhere in the ascendant plane, so appearing in the game may prove difficult for him. However, other characters have come back from worse. If he never appears in his original form in the game, at least players can interact with him through the fractures of his consciousness scattered across the Dreaming City.

6 Xivu Arath, God Of War

The Hive God, Grieving Her Brother and Lacking Immortality

It is all but confirmed that Xivu Arath, God of War will be appearing in some capacity in Episode: Heresy, as Bungie has revealed, it will be focused on the Hive pantheon, and Xivu Arath is the last unaccounted-for Hive god. Players have killed both Xivu Arath’s siblings, Oryx, the Taken King, and Savathun, the Witch Queen (despite her later return), and have been fighting Xivu Arath’s forces for years. Despite this, and Xivu Arath’s importance to the narrative of Destiny 2, they have still yet to appear on-screen.

Although humanity and the Hive are the only races in Destiny 2 to wield the Traveler’s Light, there have been other races influenced by it.

If Xivu Arath doesn’t appear in person in Episode: Heresy, it seems likely that they will do soon after, as Bungie has been preparing for the end of their story for some time, with players crippling Xivu Arath’s power in Season of the Deep. A hugely powerful being, completely unchecked, seems like the perfect choice for a big bad guy for the next episode of the game’s story.

5 Fenchurch Everis

Collector Of Curiosities for Eververse Purchases

Fenchurch Everis isn’t as narratively important as many of the other characters on this list. However, references to him have been in the game since Destiny was released in 2014. All players will be familiar with the infamous Tess Everis, the vendor for Eververse, the cosmetics store for Destiny 2. If a player stands next to Tess for any amount of time, they will likely hear her reference her uncle, Fenchurch, who travels the solar system to collect the items she then sells.

Fenchurch may not be a Hive god, or a respected member of the Vanguard scouts, but his appearance would be a fascinating opportunity to converse with someone who has been everywhere and seen everything. If nothing else, it would be a nice moment to see Tess finally see her uncle in person after waiting for him for the past 10 years. Plus, it would be the perfect opportunity to refresh the cosmetics inventory Eververse offers.

4 Marcus Ren

A Sparrow Racing Legend

Before Crow took up the mantle in The Final Shape, many believed Marcus Ren was a strong contender for the next Hunter Vanguard. He’s a sparrow racing legend, along with his best friend Enoch Bast, and was well respected by Cayde-6 before his death. From his few appearances in the lore, Marcus Ren seems to embody what it means to be a Hunter, going fast, having a good time, and fearlessly protecting those he cares about.

While many would love to see Marcus Ren appear, and bring Sparrow Racing League back to the game with him, he intentionally left the Last City to avoid the possibility of taking up the role of Hunter Vanguard. The only certainty for a Hunter Vanguard is death, many having had the role since it was introduced. However, now that Crow has taken the job, there’s a higher chance that Marcus may return.

3 Shin Malphur

The Hunter With The Golden Gun Who Hunted the Shadows of Yor

Shin Malphur is a notorious Guardian and the previous owner of a legendary weapon. Well-known to The Drifter, Shin Malphur spent years hunting down the corrupted group of guardians known as the Shadows of Yor, after killing their leader Dredgen Yor. Shin Malphur is known by many as The Man With The Golden Gun as he was one of the first to use the Hunter Super that Guardians know and love. He also gifted the Guardians his weapon, The Last Word, which has been a meta-defining weapon in the crucible at certain times in Destiny history.

Shin Malphur is also the only Guardian to be known to use another’s Ghost, taking his mentor’s Ghost after his murder at the hands of Dredgen Yor. While players have been spoken to by Shin Malphur before, he has never physically appeared in the game. His story may have concluded with the deaths of the Shadows of Yor, but his position as a hunter of corrupted guardians could easily become necessary once again in the future.

2 Aunor Mahal

Leader Of The Praxic Order

Aunor Mahal is another Guardian whom players have had brief communication with in-game, in the form of letters sent to them by Aunor throughout the Season of the Drifter. Aunor is the leader of the group known as the Praxic Order, a collective of warlocks dedicated to keeping artifacts of darkness out of the guardian’s hands, to prevent corruption. They were adverse to the position of The Drifter in the tower, due to his rogue status and past as a follower of the corrupt Dredgen Yor.

Aunor is also a member of Ikora Rey’s secret network, The Hidden, which acts as a spy network for the Vanguard, collecting information on the Darkness and other enemies of the city. Of all the members of both the Praxic Order and The Hidden, Aunor is the most frequently mentioned in lore and by Ikora, and is the only one to have directly contacted the player. They are an important part of maintaining stability within the ranks of the guardians and maintaining Ikora Rey’s information network, and as such deserve a chance to appear in person.

1 The First Fireteam To Venture Into The Vault Of Glass

Lost To The Far Corners Of Time

This final entry is a bit of a strange one, containing a whole fireteam of Guardians, all of whom are confirmed to be dead. The first team to venture into the Vault of Glass raid consisted of the titan Kabr, the warlock Praedyth, and the hunter Pahanin. Each has become a part of the legend of Destiny, leaving artifacts for the player that are pivotal to defeating the Vex in the Raid. Their weapons and armor can be collected by completing the raid, and Kabr himself gave his life to form the shield used throughout the raid.

Despite their deaths, there is no reason these guardians can’t return, especially considering their demise took place in the Vault of Glass, within which time isn’t regularly linear. If the players can go back and save Saint-14, there is no reason something similar can’t happen to these legendary heroes. However, that could make for some confusing paradoxical issues within the Vault of Glass itself, which would make for an interesting addition to the raid. Kabr is set to make an appearance in Destiny Rising, the mobile game that takes place in an alternate timeline, so maybe that will scratch the itch many players have to meet these characters.
