It’s not a Life is Strange game if it isn’t filled with suspense and mystery, and Life is Strange: Double Exposure seems to have a lot of them. Max Caulfield returns in the sequel to solve another murder of a close friend using her new time-bending powers.

True to its name, Life is Strange: Double Exposure has double the challenges as Max has to jump between two timelines to investigate Safi’s murder, solve puzzles, and remember interactions with two sets of characters. Apart from the riveting story, developer Deck Nine has prepared exciting features to help fans navigate Max’s new adventure, while also immersing themselves in Double Exposure‘s world.

Max’s New Powers Explained

After the events of the first Life is Strange, Max loses her ability to rewind time but eventually discovers that she has new Shift and Pulse powers. The former allows Max to tear the fabric of time to instantaneously travel to another timeline. It’s useful for solving puzzles, navigating through doors that may be locked, and talking to suspects who won’t talk to her in another timeline. Meanwhile, Pulse lets Max extend her supernatural senses to detect where the veil is weakest between the two timelines, so she can determine the spots where she can Shift. This ability also allows her to grab a glimpse and listen in on people in the alternate timeline, as well as search for key objects without having to Shift. All these are useful for investigating Safi’s murder and making sure that she doesn’t die in the other timeline.

  • Shift: The ability to tear the fabric of time to travel to another timeline in a snap.
  • Pulse: Extend supernatural senses to detect where the veil is weakest in the timeline, and grab a quick glimpse of people and objects without having to Shift.

Navigating between two timelines may get confusing for players, but Deck Nine made sure to indicate whether Max is in the timeline where Safi’s alive or dead. This can help determine the actions that players will take next, and also ensure that they don’t say the wrong thing to the wrong people. It will be interesting to see how Max’s powers will grow throughout Life is Strange: Double Exposure, and find out how she got the powers in the first place.

Social Interactions

The Life is Strange franchise values social interactions because it helps in making important decisions in the game. But Max doesn’t have her Rewind powers anymore to undo minor and major decisions, which adds more weight to Life is Strange: Double Exposure‘s story. The sequel introduces a lot of new people in Max’s life, like Safi, Moses, and Alderman, meaning that players need to navigate unfamiliar personalities. In Deck Nine’s “Directors Interview” on YouTube, game director Jonathan Stauder and narrative director Felice Kuan explained that Max’s social interactions are key to finding Safi’s murderer, emphasizing the importance of keeping up with details to avoid running into mistakes when talking to people between the two timelines. The results of these interactions could impact Max’s investigation and the overall ending of the game, so players really need to keep a close eye on conversations.

Importing Previous Life is Strange Save File

Life is Strange: Double Exposure acknowledges the choices players made in the first game’s ending. If they still have their Life is Strange save file, it can be imported to Double Exposure and will be reflected in Max’s story. Those who don’t have access to their old save files can still go through their choices — or make new ones — through a dialogue with Safi at the start of the sequel.
