Alongside her adoptive parents Loid Forger and Yor Forger, Anya Forger is one of the protagonists of Spy x Family. When Loid first went to the orphanage to acquire a child for Operation Strix, Anya tricked him into choosing her by pretending to be a child prodigy. Though it didn’t take long for him to realize he had made a mistake, her perseverance and refusal to let him abandon her resulted in her being allowed to stay, and she is now the focal point of this very important mission.
Though she struggles, Anya is working hard to help Loid on his mission and as a telepath, she is the only member of the Forger family aware of all their secret identities. Because of this, Anya has a mission of her own, and she is willing to work as hard as possible to succeed.
Who is Anya Forger?
Formerly test subject 007 of an unknown organization, Anya Forger is a telepathic child who loves her spy cartoons, enjoys peanuts, and is desperate for a family. She arrives at the orphanage after having escaped the facility, but not much else is known about her mysterious past. Her precise age is also a mystery, as when Loid arrived at the orphanage, she read his mind and lied when she discovered he was searching for a six-year-old. Nonetheless, she consistently acts younger than this, and it is estimated she is more likely around four or five.
She is a child and in acting her age she is often brash, impulsive and disobeys orders, but she also cares about her fake parents Loid and Yor, and tries very hard to varying degrees of success. Given her age, most plans involving her tend not to go as intended. However, she always manages to pull through and often finds herself chancing her way into making progress towards Operation Strix. She is also incredibly emotionally aware for her age and, thanks to her telepathic abilities, she has a consistently good read on the people and situations around her. There is a downside to this though, as due to her depending too much on her telepathy, she has no situational awareness when it’s absent.
What Is Anya’s Mission?
Anya Forger is as much a complex character as she is adorable. Due to her upbringing, she has a lot of abandonment issues, so she often uses her telepathic abilities to understand what is expected of her in the hopes that if she behaves that way, she won’t have to be alone again. This has put her in the unique position of being aware of everyone’s secret identities, and she understands that if Loid or Yor were to discover the truth, the family would have to disband. She also knows that if Operation Strix were to fail, Loid would have to return her to the orphanage, so she wants to avoid both these things at all costs. As she desperately desires the improvised Forger family to stay together, she is willing to do anything to achieve this goal, going so far as to dub this objective her secret mission within the family.
Anya’s mission may not be flashy or complex, but it is certainly coherent with both her age and her past. The consistent trauma she has suffered has severely impacted her in more than just her lack of situational awareness and this fear of abandonment is a source of great stress and anxiety to the point she won’t even reveal her telepathy in fear of getting abused for it. Nonetheless, she is still an enthusiastic and excitable child that genuinely enjoys herself as she tries to accomplish her objectives. Anya’s efforts and hard work have paid off and she has endeared herself to Yor and Loid Forger, bringing her closer to her mission to have a family that loves her.
Anya Forger’s antics in Spy x Family are both heartwarming and hilarious. The community has fallen in love with this enthusiastic young child and many fans hope to see the Forger family become permanent by the end of the series.
