Final Fantasy 14 made some specific creatures very popular among the fans. This can be seen with the various appearances of the shoebill or the widely loved ambystomas – the axolotl-inspired animals that even became a mount rewarded in the last section of the Pandaemonium raid’s Savage mode.

The fat cat is another example of that, even if it isn’t seen as commonly throughout the game’s story. This creature inspired a cute mount players can buy in the online store, as well as a minion players can obtain in game without spending extra money. What’s better is that even those enjoying Final Fantasy 14‘s Free Trial can get it, as long as you have a bit of luck – or a lot of gil!

How To Get The Fat Cat Minion

There are a few different methods to get this minion. None of them require spending real money, although some rely on spending the game’s main currency, gil, while others can be more time-consuming. You won’t have to pay for it in any way if you choose to get it through the original acquisition methods, but you’ll need some luck to succeed in that, as well as to meet some previous requirements.

The first requirement is to get a retainer. For those who don’t know, retainers are NPCs you can hire to store gil and items, use the market board, or send on expeditions to get items. They can have jobs assigned to them, but they’ll start from level 1, and it’s through those expeditions – called ventures – that they’ll earn experience to level up. There is, however, a limitation to how much retainers can level up. They can’t be above the player’s level on a certain job, so if the Warrior of Light is a level 10 Conjurer, the retainer can only reach level 10 as a conjurer, with higher levels only available once the player moves beyond that.

Getting the fat cat will require sending the retainer on Waterside Exploration ventures, found in the menu shown in the picture above, although this reward will demand ventures of higher levels than pictured. These will be made available according to the retainer’s level in the fishing job, so you’ll have to level up as a Fisher to at least level 50, then assign the same class to the retainer and send them on ventures, so they get experience and level up as well.

The first venture in which players can get the fat cat minion is Waterside Exploration XIV, which requires a minimum of level 50 and 200 gathering rating. The minion can also be found in Waterside Exploration XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XXIV, and XXV, but that is the earliest opportunity players will have to get it, as the other ventures demand even higher levels and gathering.

Once the retainer is sent exploring, it’ll be necessary to wait 18 real-world hours for them to complete it. It’s worth noting that, even then, it isn’t guaranteed the minion will be among the rewards – it’ll probably take more than one try to get it, as the loot is entirely random. In that case, all there is to do is to keep trying to send the retainers in the Waterside Exploration ventures listed above until they bring back the fat cat.

It’s also possible to get the minion from the item “Materiel Container 3.0”. This can be acquired by speaking to the Quartermaster of your respective Grand Company in exchange for 20000 Company Seals. You’ll have to be at least at Captain level in your Grand Company to be able to buy the item, that can be found in the Lieutenant/Captain section of the vendor’s catalog.

  • Flame Quartermaster can be found in Ul’dah – Steps of Nald (X: 8.4, Y: 9.0)
  • Serpent Quartermaster can be found in New Gridania (X: 9.8, Y: 11.0)
  • Storm Quartermaster can be found in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks (X: 13.1, Y: 12.7)

Once again, this isn’t an assured method to get the minion straight away. Through the Materiel Container 3.0 you can get several rewards, including two mounts and dozens of minions, among them the fat cat. So, while there is a chance you might get the minion, it could also take several attempts before that happens.

For those who aren’t interested in going through all that trouble but would still like to get the minion, there are simpler ways to get it. The first would be to buy it from the Itinerant Moogle in exchange for irregular tomestones when the Moogle Treasure Trove event is happening. As this is a limited-time event with no set schedule, there is no exact way to predict when it’ll happen again, but once it does, players can get the fat cat minion through it.

Alternatively, the simplest option is to use the market board. This will require the player to spend gil, but the minion is far from being one of the most expensive ones in Final Fantasy 14. The amount might seem high for beginners, but it soon becomes little as players progress through the game. Usually, the fat cat minion can be found on the market for prices ranging from 20,000 gil to 60,000 depending on the Data Center and server. Once you buy it, the item will be in your inventory to unlock the minion and it to your collection!
