Highlights
- Miyazaki confirms Shadow of the Erdtree as the sole Elden Ring DLC.
- The DLC’s release date is June 21, 2024.
- FromSoftware fans hope for an Elden Ring sequel in the future.
FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed that the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be the one and only expansion ever released for Elden Ring. Elden Ring was a massive, unprecedented success for FromSoftware when it was released in 2022. The award-winning, critically-acclaimed open world game set sales records for FromSoftware, created a bunch of new Soulslike fans, and has been hailed as one of the absolute best video games ever made.
Previous FromSoftware games have featured DLC expansions to give players more to conquer beyond the base game. The first Dark Souls featured Artorias of the Abyss, whereas Dark Souls 2 had The Lost Crowns. Bloodborne‘s The Old Hunters expansion is often pointed to as one of the company’s best post-launch DLCs, while Dark Souls 3 had two major DLC expansions, Ashes of Ariandel and The Ringed City. There’s long been an expectation for Elden Ring to release its own DLC, and time is nearly upon us, but it will have to tide fans over indefinitely.
Elden Ring Player Beats Game Using Soldier of Godrick Build
A devoted Elden Ring player rises as the new lord of the Lands Between using a character build inspired by the Soldier of Godrick.
Miyazaki has confirmed in an interview with Campfire Camp that the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be the one and only expansion ever released for the open world RPG. Some fans may have assumed as much, since it’s rare for FromSoftware to release more than one DLC for its games, but others may have held out hope that Elden Ring could enjoy multiple expansions considering its sheer popularity.
Shadow of the Erdtree Will Be the Last Elden Ring DLC
Many FromSoftware fans are likely not surprised by this news, especially considering just how long they’ve had to wait to play the Elden Ring DLC. The Shadow of the Erdtree release date is June 21, 2024, over two years since the original game launched. This is the longest time between base game release and DLC launch for any FromSoftware game, and it makes sense that the studio may want to move on to new things when it’s done.
FromSoftware’s next major game remains a mystery, but many are hoping to see an Elden Ring sequel. While there may not be more new DLC for the original Elden Ring, FromSoftware could always move forward with a full-blown sequel of some kind. Time will tell if that actually happens, but hopefully, fans will learn more about the studio’s next project sooner rather than later.
FromSoftware releases new games at a fairly regular pace, having had some kind of new release for the last three years in a row. Elden Ring was released in 2022, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon dropped in 2023, and Shadow of the Erdtree is set to launch on June 21. It remains to be seen if something from FromSoftware will be released in 2025 or not, but it’s possible fans will at least be treated to an announcement about the next major game from the studio within the next year or so.
