  • Although there are doubts about Cavill’s return to DC after James Gunn’s takeover, fans are excited about the possibility of seeing Cavill’s Superman again and eagerly anticipate the proposed Red Son movie.

Henry Cavill’s Superman was replaced for the upcoming DCU. However, X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn shared how the fan-favorite Snyderverse actor could return as the Man of Steel without disrupting James Gunn’s plans.

Superman: Red Son was a three-part DC Comics series released in 2003 under their Elseworlds imprint, set up for stories outside the DC Universe canon. Superman: Red Son‘s premise asks, “What if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?” Created by Mark Millar, the publication follows Superman as he lands on a Ukranian collective farm and becomes a state-sponsored hero described as fighting for “the Champion of the common worker who fights a never-ending battle for Stalin, socialism, and the international expansion of the Warsaw Pact.”

Supergirl DCU fan art shows what House of the Dragon actress Milly Alcock would look like as Kara Zor-El in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

In an interview for BroBible’s Post Credit Podcast, Vaughn was asked his opinion on Red Son as a possible live-action adaptation. The director called the edition “one of the cleverest comics” he’d read, and taking into account the current state of the world, he says, “it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and Russian history…” Before he could finish, a lightbulb sparks a way to get the fan-favorite Man of Steel back into the DCEU. He told the interviewer, “Could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie.”

Superman Red Son

Filmmaker Gunn’s reimagination of the DCU was announced exactly one year ago, on January 31, 2023. 10 new development projects in film, TV, and animation were announced to establish a new DCU continuity, bringing forth a new Superman, with David Corenswet cast in the leading role, who largely resembles Cavill. Gunn titled Chapter One of the revamped DCU “Gods and Monsters,” set to kick off this year with an animated series, though the creators consider Superman: Legacy the true kickoff of their vision, coming in 2025.

Alongside the official “Gods and Monsters” timeline, Gunn said their DC Studios would develop Elseworlds projects, which leaves the door open for Vaughn to helm a Red Son film separated from the rest. Gunn recently shared a promising update on Threads for JJ Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Superman Elseworlds film, which is rumored to feature a Black Superman. Though nothing is confirmed for Vaughn, there’s no doubt the director, who has multiple Kingsman, Kick-Ass, and X-Men movies under his belt, would take the opportunity to work with Cavill, who is one of the leads of his latest film Argylle.

Fans excitedly shared posts on X about having the “best Superman” back, which would make the proposed Red Son movie very popular. It’s widely believed Cavill never got the proper sequel he deserved for Man of Steel, so while the new story would revamp the character in a different light, it would allow him to gain proper closure for the role. However, despite the love for his take on the hero, there’s still a lot of doubt that Cavill’s Superman would return to DC after Gunn and Safran’s takeover of the studio, with fans believing the focus should be on his future endeavors outside of Superman and turning towards Corenswet’s upcoming take on the character.

Superman movies can be streamed on Max.
