There are many genres of anime, from action to fantasy. Viewers enjoy mechas fighting and protagonists wielding massive weapons to defeat a great evil; however, sometimes people just want to sit back and watch something wholesome. When it comes to relaxing in front of the screen, some of the most feel-good anime tend to fall under the categories of comedy, romance, and slice of life. These often have less fan service and conflict appears in the form of everyday issues or comedic misunderstandings.

The best wholesome anime are a fresh change of pace from the high stakes and death-defying action sequences that define the most popular series. Suffice it to say, these shows strive to leave viewers satisfied after seeing their characters enjoy life and their relationships blossom.

Updated on September 13, 2024 by Mark Sammut: As Summer 2024 continues to move along, the season’s most wholesome anime have not changed. Consequently, two older series have been added to the discussion.

Most Wholesome Anime Of Summer 2024

  • Giji Harem The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies
Japanese Title Giji Harem Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita
    Release Date 2024-07-05 2024-07-09
Genres Romance, Comedy Romance, Comedy, Fantasy
    Studio Nomad Bones
    Creator Yū Saitō Cocoa Fujiwara
    Streaming Service(s) Crunchyroll Crunchyroll

As the current season is nearly done by this point, now is the perfect time to recommend a few of Summer 2024’s most wholesome anime.

  • Pseudo Harem – By far the season’s most wholesome anime, Pseudo Harem is just an adorable romcom about two characters who are just awkwardly cute together. After hearing that her senpai, Eiji, would love to have a harem, Rin uses her acting talent to fulfill that wish, transforming into different personas at the drop of a pin. Unsurprisingly, Rin has an actual crush on Eiji, although she hides her interest through her characters. Romantic subtext aside, Pseudo Harem is primarily a slice of life that follows these two through their daily banter.
  • The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies – Except for some fanservice that often feels out of place, this magical girl anime is generally a tension-free delight. As suggested by the title, two supposed enemies begin to essentially date, which involves a lot of sweets. The magical girl in question, Mimori, can come across as an airhead at times, but she is very likable. Meanwhile, the villain, Mira, constantly finds himself overwhelmed by his love for the magical girl. It is all good fun.
