Nana represents hope and resilience in the face of adversity. She believed that a hero should smile regardless of how dire the situation is and be a beacon of hope to the people they were saving, this rubbed off heavily on All Might and is the reason he is always smiling when he arrives to save the people. She inspired All Might to take up the mantle as the symbol of peace, instilling in him the values of courage, compassion, and dedication to protecting others. Nana transferred the One For All quirk to All Might when he was young and took him under her wing and trained him together with her friend Gran Torino.

Because in this world, the ones who are smiling are the strongest

She chose All Might as her successor because she recognized his passion and determination for protecting people, even though he was quirkless. Her mentorship was important in shaping who All Might became. This comparison is well drawn as this is also what All Might sees in Midoriya when looking for a successor for One For All. Even though Midoriya was quirkless, All Might recognized his potential and passion and eventually chose him to become his successor and transferred One For All to him. The My Hero Academia series now follows Midoriya’s growth as he learns to use One For All and faces all the dangers he could possibly face as he grows not just as a person but also as a hero.

Her Sacrifice and Legacy

A Loving and Kind Woman, Nana Was Incredibly Brave

A compassionate and fearsome hero, who faced extremely powerful villains, including All For One. However, being a hero does not come without sacrifice. Nana had to put her life on the line battling All For One, so she could save the people in need. Her sacrifice is a reminder that heroes could face death at any moment and that it is important to put the well-being of civilians and those weaker above their own interests for the greater good.

Apart from her life as a hero, Nana also battled with the hardships of raising a family at the same time. She faced major setbacks and had to put her son Kotaro, who she loved dearly, into foster care because of her demanding job as a hero. Even though Nana believed she was doing the right thing because she loved him, however Kotaro believed that his mother didn’t love him and grew to despise heroes as he believed she abandoned him just to save others.

This hatred carried on in Kotaro’s life, and he also prevented his own children from becoming heroes. The hatred was so bad that when Kotaro found out that his daughter and son (Tenko who later becomes Tomura Shigaraki) had found the photo with him and his mother Nana, he went into a fit of rage and takes his anger out on Tenko, causing the young boy to awaken his decay quirk, killing his entire family. Sadly, the young Tenko grows up to become the evilest villain of them all.

Nana’s legacy was never tarnished as there were still those who became her light in the tunnel of darkness and even though Nana led a difficult life, her selfless sacrifice and determination were crucial not just to All Might but also to Midoriya. Her memory serves as an inspiration to many heroes and true heroism lies not only in extraordinary power but in the strength of overcoming the worst. Despite her death, her legacy lives on through All Might as he carries on her smile and resilience to stand against the darkness to come.
