When a player is playing well in the NBA, it can be an amazing thing to watch that character completely dominate a game. The same goes for playing a match in NBA 2K25. As a character begins to build momentum, they can easily begin to take over the entire game and diminish the defense’s confidence in a matter of moments. The game even comes with a mechanic in the MyCareer mode that is aptly named Takeover, which can be a huge momentum boost for anyone who is playing well.

However, this can be easier said than done as it requires players to perform at a high level, which isn’t always going to happen. It also takes time to build that Takeover, and it will not be something that you can just activate immediately. This is to help keep the experience balanced. This guide is here to help anyone looking to help themselves unleash their Takeover when the game demands it.

How To Activate Takeover

When beginning a game on MyCareer, players will notice a Takeover meter in the top-right corner of their screen. This is what they will need to fill order to activate a Takeover. To do so, players will have to perform and play a clean game. This means that for every made basket, every good defensive possession, and every successful play run will add to the meter. However, this also means that mistakes will take away from the meter, and it can deplete pretty quickly.

Once the meter is full, players won’t have to activate it manually. Once it fills up, the meter will be engulfed in flames. This is the game’s signal that the Takeover is active.

When it is active, a player’s Takeover Ability will enhance specific stats. For example, some players can have their Takeover Ability give them a better chance at landing their three-point shots or maybe pull off the biggest, earth-shaking dunk. Activating a Takeover will not mean that they cannot make a mistake, but they will have a much better chance of being successful. Think of it like getting a bonus on a die roll in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How To Change Takeover Ability

NBA 2K25 - Takeover Abilities

In order to choose the proper Takeover Ability, go to the Pause Menu and select the Progression tab. On this screen, you can find the Takeover skill. Selecting this will give you the chance to choose which ability you want. This will then be what is elevated when the Takeover Ability is activated in a game.

It’s best to choose an ability that complements the type of player you are working with. A point or shooting guard might want to go for a better three-point shot or pulling off the best lay-ups, rather than better dunking or post-up game. It’s important to choose something that will improve what the player already focuses on, rather than adding something to their game that they won’t be in a position to take advantage of.
