World of Warcraft is finally going back to Gilneas in its next content update. Players can expect to help King Genn Greymane take back his kingdom in a World of Warcraft plot arc 13 years in the making.
Though World of Warcraft recently announced The War Within and released Guardians of the Dream, it still has three patches planned for Dragonflight. The first of which, called Seeds of Renewal, adds Dragonriding to the rest of the game, customizations for Trolls and Draenei, and the Follower Dungeons system to World of Warcraft.
One highlighted feature in this new patch in particular took players by surprise, however. According to the development blog World of Warcraft shared about Seeds of Renewal, the Worgen of Gilneas are finally getting the chance to go back home. “King Greymane is ready to retake his kingdom,” the blog reads, “but Gilneas isn’t as empty as expected. Help reclaim what was lost and return the kingdom to Gilnean hands.” After losing the kingdom to natural disaster and Forsaken invasion during Cataclysm, it seems like the Worgen will be able to take back their nation after 13 real-life years of being displaced.
“King Greymane is ready to retake his kingdom, but Gilneas isn’t as empty as expected. Help reclaim what was lost and return the kingdom to Gilnean hands.”
The brief description doesn’t give players much to go off of, but players are already speculating as to what the Gilneas Reclamation questline might involve. Previous Forsaken quests had teased a tentative peace between them and the Gilneans, so fans are wondering who might have moved into Gilneas in the meantime. Players won’t have to wait long to find out if it is a known World of Warcraft threat like the Scarlet Crusade, or a brand-new one, as parts of the questline will likely appear on the Public Test Realm soon.
Either way, fans are excited to see how the Gilneas Reclamation story plays out. The Worgen have been displaced since they were added in Cataclysm, and with the Night Elves finally getting a new home in World of Warcraft’s latest patch, many were hoping the playable werewolves would be next. It seems World of Warcraft’s development team is also excited, with senior narrative designer Anne Stickney and senior game designer Sarah Cotner both sharing teasers of their own on their personal Twitter accounts.
According to Stickney, players of both factions will be able to participate in this quest regardless of race, similar to the Forsaken epilogue added in Shadowlands Patch 9.2.5. While the content update doesn’t have an exact release date, players can probably expect Seeds of Renewal to come out sometime early next year, with the first bits of it available to play on the first builds of the PTR within a matter of days.
