Nintendo has revealed the file sizes for two major upcoming Switch titles: Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario and Luigi: Brothership. This month’s Nintendo Direct June 2024 livestream was an eventful showcase for Nintendo fans, as several exciting future Switch releases were announced. While the previously confirmed Nintendo Switch successor console was nowhere to be found, there is plenty for gamers to look forward to on the current Nintendo hardware.
The very first of these announcements was for Mario and Luigi: Brothership, the long-awaited next installment in the popular Mario and Luigi series. The Mario siblings’ latest madcap adventure drew interest thanks to its colorful cel-shaded art style and an assortment of button-pressing special attacks – even as the developer behind Mario and Luigi: Brothership remains a mystery. Meanwhile, the 2010 Wii platformer Donkey Kong Country Returns is getting a Nintendo Switch remaster next January, with Forever Entertainment SA taking over developmental duties for Retro Studios.

The estimated file sizes for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario and Luigi: Brothership have been listed on the Japanese Nintendo eShop (via NintendoLife). First is Donkey Kong Country Returns HD at 9.0GB, about 2.4 GB larger than Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (which took 6.6GB of space when it was ported to the Switch in 2018). Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi: Brothership weighs in at 10.0GB, making it 3.5 GB smaller than last November’s Super Mario RPG remake (6.5 GB) and about half the size of the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake that launched on Switch last May (5.0 GB).

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario and Luigi: Brothership are just the latest in a series of upcoming Nintendo Switch games to have their file sizes revealed. Last month, the soon-to-be-released Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD was confirmed to take up 3.3 GB of space at the same time that the aforementioned Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door had its own size announced. Earlier this week, it was revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which was also revealed at the Nintendo Direct livestream, was confirmed to be 6 GB.
Both Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Mario and Luigi: Brothership are sure to drum up excitement from Nintendo fans, as the original Donkey Kong Country Returns was deemed one of the Wii’s best 2D platformers before being re-released on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, while the Mario and Luigi series has been in limbo ever since original developer AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy back in 2019. These fans may have to wait a while longer for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, as it isn’t set to launch until January 16, 2025. In the meantime, Mario and Luigi: Brothership will jump onto the Nintendo Switch on November 7.
