Noob Saibot Opens the Door For One Character’s Return in Mortal Kombat 2

Noob Saibot’s role in Mortal Kombat 1‘s Khaos Reigns expansion may have cleared the way for another fighter to make the next game’s roster. Khaos Reigns played two roles for Mortal Kombat 1, those being expanding the roster and pushing a branch of the new era’s story forward. In the process, it ended up creating a fantastic argument for a previous fighter’s return. There is a lot that can change between two games, and Mortal Kombat‘s new era still has plenty of possibilities. With that in mind, recent events seem to be smiling down on one fighter’s chances.

Even though Mortal Kombat 1‘s Khaos Reigns missed some characters that many fans were expecting, it still did its job to help the game grow. The three guest characters are going to be released on a staggered schedule, similar to the first wave of DLC. However, the new-era versions of Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor all came out at once. It’s an appropriate move, considering their relevance in Khaos Reigns’ story. Their entrance marks a notable shift in the status quo ahead of Mortal Kombat 2, and the next Mortal Kombat will have a new element to juggle in the form of the new Lin Kuei.

Sub-Zero Becomes Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat 1 Khaos Reigns

Similar to his previous counterpart, Mortal Kombat 1‘s version of Bi-Han sheds the title of Sub-Zero over the course of Khaos Reigns. After his encounter with Titan Havik, he was remade as Noob Saibot. In addition to his new name, he also swaps out his moveset. His transformation cost him the ice powers that he wielded as Sub-Zero. In their place, he now has darkness-themed abilities, such as generating shadow clones and portals. This is an effective way to show the difference between Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot and also leaves Mortal Kombat 2‘s roster seemingly missing the archetype that Sub-Zero provides.

Frost Can Be Mortal Kombat 2’s Resident Ice-Wielder

Even though players will probably not be seeing

Mortal Kombat 1
‘s Sub-Zero
appear in that form in the sequel, that doesn’t mean there won’t be an ice ninja on the roster—let alone some form of reversed or reimagined Sub-Zero at all, given how popular and ubiquitous the character is.

That said, Frost has appeared in both previous timelines and, as her name implies, is also a ninja who uses cryomancy in combat. In addition, while she only appears as a Kameo fighter in MK1, a couple of lines of pre-fight banter imply her existence in the new era. This alone already gives her a shot at appearing later on. Now that Sub-Zero has lost his ice powers, there’s suddenly a roster spot that Frost can easily take.

Frost’s Story Can Get Remixed in Mortal Kombat’s New Era

Just being an ice ninja isn’t Frost’s only reason to return. Frost’s appearances in Mortal Kombat have always seen her as an apprentice of Sub-Zero gone rogue. With so many characters in the new era being reimagined, the same could be true for Frost. Even if she remains a student of Sub-Zero, Bi-Han being evil holds some potential dynamic changes. She could be an ambitious apprentice as previously implied, become an independent villain, or even end up siding with the heroes after her rebellion in the new era.

Bi-Han’s transformation shook up the dynamics of Mortal Kombat‘s new era and Frost is a character that Mortal Kombat 1‘s sequel can feature as a result. Not only would she ensure that players who like freezing their enemies can have a go-to on the roster, but she could also be an interesting addition to the Lin Kuei’s new dynamic. After Mortal Kombat 1, there are sure to be some additions to the roster.
