  • There have been a number of rumored codenames for the Nintendo Switch’s successor console.
  • Midori suggests that the possible codename for the Switch 2 could be “Ounce,” based on insights about a Breath of the Wild enhancement.
  • Developers have interchangeably used names like “Switch 2” and “New Switch,” but it’s likely that the final name is still a secret from many.

A notable Sega leaker, Midori, weighs in on the Nintendo Switch‘s successor console, along with the possible codenames that she heard. After years of rumors about a successor for Nintendo’s hybrid console, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa officially confirmed that the company would make an announcement regarding the Switch 2 during the fiscal year. The confirmation of the successor console has, however, resulted in a number of different rumors about the Switch successor, leading fans to speculate about a variety of things, including the console’s production codename.

Claims about a codename for the Nintendo Switch successor have been a bit nebulous over the past month, with some leakers saying that the codename of the console would be “Muji,” stating this name was found after digging through a Switch 2 software development kit. Some more knowledgeable Switch hackers and developers put forward the idea that the leaked “Muji” name was a placeholder in order to avoid leaking the console’s real codename. That said, none of these leaks have been proven to be true yet. Notable leaker Midori, well-known for her incredibly accurate leaks of Sega games, also weighed in on the Switch 2’s possible codename.

Sega Leaker Teases New Nintendo Game in Development

New rumors are surfacing about an upcoming Nintendo game from a source with a good track record for leaking Persona and other Sega information.

In a recent Twitter thread, Midori addresses a previous leak of hers, where Nintendo appears to be gearing up for an enhanced version of Breath of the Wild for the new Switch system. Since the new project’s internal codename has a suffix of -O, she theorizes the codename of the Switch successor console might be “Ounce,” with this name stemming from how Nintendo is able to put stronger hardware onto a portable device without making it too heavy, comparing it to the Nintendo GameCube.

“Ounce” may be Switch 2 Codename, Says Midori

Midori notes that in conversations that she’s heard about future Sega games on the Nintendo Switch successor, the names “Switch 2” and “New Switch” were used interchangeably, believing neither name will be used for the final console. A reply by Twitter user Aero notes that Nintendo is likely keeping the console’s name close to the chest and is referring to the system as Switch 2 or other similar names, as it’s easy to say. Midori says she agrees, theorizing that Nintendo likely hasn’t told many developers the true name of its next hardware.

Regardless if Muji, Ounce, or even Switch 2 is the codename of Nintendo’s next console, these names usually don’t become the final ones. The original Nintendo Switch used the “NX” moniker before it was officially revealed in 2016, after all. Fans will need to wait until Nintendo’s official reveal of the Switch successor.
