Overwatch 2 Reversing 6v6 is a Controversy Waiting to Happen

Developers at Blizzard are playing with the idea of bringing 6v6 back to Overwatch 2, and the community is split right down the middle on the idea.

In an interview hosted by Overwatch 2 streamers Flats and svb, Alec Dawson explained that it’s not only the tanks who are swapping; DPS players frequently change heroes as well, adding to the overall pressure. The counter-swapping strategy involves changing heroes mid-match to better counter the enemy team’s composition. He mentioned that the team has been exploring potential changes to fix the Overwatch 2 counter-swapping issue without removing hero swapping entirely. Some of the ideas tested internally include limited swaps or requiring players to earn the ability to swap heroes. These experiments aim to balance the flexibility of hero swaps with the need to reduce the constant pressure on tanks.

Overwatch 2 Lead Gameplay Designer Discusses Pressure Faced by Tank Players

Dawson emphasized that while counter-swapping is a significant concern, the team does not want to restrict players to a single Overwatch 2 hero throughout the match. The goal is to find a middle ground where players can still switch heroes strategically without causing stress for tank players. He also emphasized the importance of educating players about their roles and how their hero choices impact team composition, noting that support players, for example, can also switch roles to adapt to the team’s needs.

The role of tanks in Overwatch 2 is crucial. These heroes are designed to absorb damage and protect their teammates, often leading the charge in battles. Each Overwatch 2 tank hero offers unique playstyles, ranging from defensive fortifications to aggressive engagements, making them essential for effective team strategies. However, the shift to 5v5 matches has heightened the demands on tank players, making their role even more critical and, at times, more stressful.

As the Overwatch 2 team continues to experiment with potential solutions, it remains committed to enhancing the gameplay experience for all players. By addressing the specific challenges faced by tank players and refining the counter-swapping mechanics, the developer hopes to create a more enjoyable environment for everyone.
