Highlights

  • Pokemon Legends Z-A could finally shed light on long-standing mysteries from Pokemon X and Y, such as the Lumiose City Ghost Girl.
  • The lack of a Pokemon Z led to unresolved storylines and loose ends in Gen 6, which Legends Z-A can now potentially address.
  • With any luck, there will soon be closure on unanswered questions like the locked power plant doors and mysterious train tracks in Couriway Town.

Pokemon X and Y were released way back in 2013, but there are still some mysteries within the games that have yet to be explained. At first, it was assumed that some of these quirks would be elaborated on in a follow-up game, Pokemon Z. This would follow in the tradition of Pokemon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, and later Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. But Pokemon Z never happened. Instead, players will make their return to Kalos over a decade later via Pokemon Legends Z-A.

Pokemon Legends Z-A has the unique opportunity to address these mysteries that have plagued players for years. Countless theories have spawned concerning the possible answers to these riddles and although the game will be limited to a new, likely expanded map of Lumiose City, there is plenty of room for acknowledgment of these loose threads left behind by Pokemon X and Y.

Pokemon Legends Z-A Can Atone for Pokemon X and Y’s Greatest Sin

Pokemon Legends Z-A is in a prime position to fix two of the biggest issues with Gen 6 games, which combined make for X and Y’s greatest sin.

Why a Pokemon Z Was Never Made

There are several theories as to why Pokemon Z was never made. The official statement on the subject by the Pokemon Company comes from producer Junichi Masuda, who said that it never intended to make a Pokemon Z. This answer has apparently been satisfactory, pointing particularly to the way that Zygarde, the third of the Kalos legendaries, was relegated to such a minor role in the next, new mainline Pokemon titles, Sun and Moon.

Furthermore, the lackluster villains and lack of post-game could indicate that there was meant to be a third game to round out Pokemon X and Y. Instead of Z, players have Pokemon Legends Z-A to pick up where the previous games left off.

Mysteries Pokemon Z-A Can Finally Shed Light on

Lumiose City Ghost Girl

Ghosts have been a frequent part of Pokemon lore since the beginning, but there is one ghost in Pokemon‘s Lumiose City that has been haunting since 2013. On the second floor of an unassuming office building, players will be stopped in their tracks upon exiting the elevator. The lights will flicker and the figure of a black-haired girl will suddenly appear behind the player. She doesn’t have any walking animation, and just glides away, saying, “No, you’re not the one…”

Players have tried, and failed, to connect this mysterious incident with any other part of the game. Despite their best efforts and a decade of wondering, players have not yet discovered the identity of the Lumiose City Ghost Girl. It’s possible that this quick scare was meant to be just that: a kind of Pokemon Easter egg to surprise unsuspecting gamers. That said, acknowledgment or even an explanation of this haunting in Lumiose City would be a memorable addition to Pokemon Legends Z-A.

The Message At The Train Station

One theory about the Lumiose City Ghost Girl connects to another mystery in the city. Inside the train station, hidden on the back of a timetable is the message, “I’m going to go for help. Wait in the usual place.” Some have theorized that this “usual place” is the second floor of the office building and that the person waiting is the Ghost Girl.

Possibly searching for whoever left the message is a boy wandering around the train station, who only says, “It should be someplace around here, right?” To this day, it is unsure what these two lines of dialogue are meant to be connected to, or if they have any deeper meaning.

The Locked Power Plant Doors

In Pokemon X and Y, one of the main problems plaguing Lumiose City is a blackout. Eventually, the player restores power by defeating Team Flare inside the power plant on Route 13. But there are other power plants, including three locked doors in the Kalos Badlands that are difficult to access in the sandstorm.

Some players have theorized that these were meant to be opened in the post-game but to no avail. Locked doors in video games are tempting, pulling players to try to discover the secrets behind them. Since Pokemon Legends Z-A appears to take place in a futuristic version of Lumiose City, it stands to reason that maintaining, and accessing, the power plants may be an important part of the game.

The Train Tracks In Couriway Town

Although Pokemon Z-A will take place within the confines of Lumiose City, the game could still clarify something about the Kalos town called Couriway. In Couriway, there is a train station and train tracks that are said to bring travelers from all over to see the majestic waterfalls there.

Players have long theorized that these train tracks actually connect to either a new, unreleased area of Kalos or another region entirely, while other theories suggest that the tracks lead to Anville Town in the Unova region. When Pokemon Sword and Shield was released, rumors started up again about a possible connection between the Galar and Kalos regions.

As it is, these are just rumors, but an official confirmation about how these regions may be connected would be an exciting opportunity to explore in
Pokemon Z-A

After the success of Pokemon Legends Arceus and its influential mechanics, there are now high expectations for Pokemon Legends Z-A. These expectations will inevitably involve bringing some closure to tons of mysteries the Pokemon series has lobbed over the past decade. Though these are small details in the larger picture of the game, there will hopefully be answers upon the release of Pokemon Legends Z-A.
