Updated November 10, 2023, by Christopher Norman Worcester: As Red Dead Redemption 2 continues to find new players and fans, it is important to constantly ensure the information provided is the very best. With that in mind, this update will focus on ensuring that players can still access the Missouri Fox Trotter in all the ways mentioned, and also add a video guide for one of the most popular variants of the horse breed in RDR2.
The Missouri Fox Trotter is a brave, battle-hardened horse breed that excels in a variety of scenarios in Red Dead Redemption 2. Fox Trotters are not easily spooked and possess the health and stamina necessary for extended journeys. Bonded Fox Trotters are probably the best horses for players to use when fighting enemies.
Despite their slow acceleration, these horses have good top speed and standard maneuverability. Because of how versatile the horses are, a lot of players are willing to pay a steep price for one. However, there is one way to get the trophy horse for free, which is explained in detail below.
Amber Champagne Stolen Carriage Exploit
As of April 2023, players are still able to bond and lure a Missouri Fox Trotter in RDR2 from the Scarlet Meadows Stables using the stolen carriage exploit. The first step is to find a small wagon and lasso the coachman. Hijack the carriage and ride to the Scarlett Meadows stables in Lemoyne. Next, pull the wagon into the stables and fire gunshots to get wanted for disturbing the peace. Make sure to stay in the wagon while firing the gun. As soon as the wanted notification pops up, players can hop out of the wagon and peruse the stables for a free horse. This stable in particular has the Amber Champagne Missouri Fox Trotter.
Bond With The Fox Trotter In The Stables
Once gamers have spotted the Fox Trotter, climb into the stable and start giving it food to bond with the horse. After feeding the horse a few items, players have to ride away on their current horse to get rid of the Wanted level. Then, they can return and call the Fox Trotter. It will trot right out of the stables.
In just a few minutes, people can get a free Missouri Fox Trotter using this method. Return to the stable and the horse will be available to ride. Players can use this method to get any horse in the stables completely free. The glitch will not work in other stables, so the available options are limited to those for sale at Scarlett Meadows.
- Steal a small wagon
- Ride it to Scarlett Meadows
- Pull into the stables
- Shoot at the wall while in the wagon to disturb the peace
- Feed the horse to bond with it
- Ride away to clear the wanted level
- Return and call the horse
- Customize your new free Missouri Fox Trotter
Arcadia For Amateurs – III
In Chapter 2, gamers will unlock the first of the Albert Mason side missions, the first of which is called “Acadia For Amateurs.” To find Albert, head to the white question mark just south of Strawberry. Albert’s first two objectives are easy. All players need to do is follow the Coyote and then head back to Albert.
In the next step of the stranger missions, gamers will need to find Albert, who is now just to the northwest of Wallace Station. Here, he will instruct Arthur to kill five wolves. Players should note that two days of in-game time must pass before the next mission will spawn.
Mission III: Herding The Fox Trotter
During the third of these missions, a wild Missouri Fox Trotter makes an appearance. This time, Albert will be near the Heartland Overflow and will have to herd the horses closer to Albert for photography purposes. One of the horses is a Missouri Fox Trotter. Before beginning the mission, make sure to save just in case anything goes wrong. The key during the mission is to continue tracking the Fox Trotter after herding the horses to Albert. The herd will begin to run away, but can still be seen while the tracker is on.
Tracking The Fox Trotter
As soon as the cutscene begins, skip the dialogue. Using Eagle Eye to reveal the tracks, gamers can follow them to the wild Fox Trotter. By pushing down both sticks when the bar is low, it will restore every few seconds so the tracks do not disappear. Running faster will increase the speed at which the bar dissipates. There may be other tracks too; however, the horse tracks will have a blue hue. Unfortunately, it will take a few minutes for players to follow the horse all the way to the Kamassa.
Taming The Horse
As soon as the horse is spotted, Arthur can tame the horse by jumping on it. It’s simple in theory, but difficult in practice. The Fox Trotter will do anything it can to avoid being tamed. It will sprint randomly and make winding turns between the trees. The lasso will not work, so the only way to get the horse is to wait for the prompt and smash the jump button. It can take a few minutes for the horse to slow down and allow Arthur to close the distance. As usual, the horse will buck for a while until it is tamed.
The final step to making the Fox Trotter a saddled horse is to take it all the way to the stables. For some reason, gamers are not able to place a saddle on the horse even after it is tamed outside the stables. Anyone having trouble mounting the horse will just need to save and reload the save point. After loading back in, the horse will be mountable for the rest of the game.
Carmody Dell NPC Exploit
YouTuber @Orthur has found an even faster way to get a Missouri Fox Trotter for free in RDR2’s main story as early as Chapter II – so long as players haven’t interacted with the event being utilized.
This particular Missouri Fox Trotter RDR2 location is at the junction of Carmody Dell, with players instructed to enter the tunnel at the Heartland Oil Fields and set up a scope shot at the third electricity pole once they’ve come out from the other side. Once there, wait and kill the NPC lady and wait for a few moments, as she should respawn with the Missouri Fox Trotter. @Orthur says that this isn’t the only location players can do this exploit, but that it’s “the most efficient method to do it on this site.”
Buy The Fox Trotter
Anyone that doesn’t mind spending the money can purchase a Missouri Fox Trotter in RDR2 at the stables in Scarlett Meadows or Blackwater for $950. The horse becomes available for purchase in the epilogue after Chapter 6. The Scarlett Meadows Stables is home to the Amber Champagne Foxtrotter, while the Silver Dapple Pinto is available at the Blackwater Stables. The free Fox Trotter that is found using the method above is always a Silver Dapple Pinto; thus, the only way to get an Amber Champagne Fox Trotter is at the stables. The base and max stats for the Fox Trotters are listed below:
- Stamina: 6-9
- Speed: 7-10
- Acceleration: 5-7
- Health: 5-8
The Moonstone Pond Glitch Has Been Patched
In 2020, a number of players found a way to spawn a Champagne Fox Trotter by performing a series of tasks in the Cumberland Forest. Anyone that attempts the glitch will now find a dead horse after following all of the old instructions. Players should not waste their time trying to get this glitch to work, it is patched on all consoles. Likewise, it appears a few of the other related glitches have been patched as well. Fortunately, there are still two exploits that have not been fixed.
Missouri Fox Trotters in RDO
Missouri Fox Trotters were the most expensive horses in RDO for some time. There are now a few other breeds that cost slightly more, but $950.00+ is still quite a hefty price for a horse in RDO. In addition to the two breeds mentioned above, there are four additional Fox Trotters in the online version of the game. Without a discount, a few of these breeds will cost $1,250. All the Fox Trotter variants have the same stats, but some are more expensive than others. It begs the question, why are they more expensive?
- Silver Dapple Pinto: $950
- Amber Champagne: $950
- Blue Roon: $1,125
- Black Tovero: 45 Gold Bars
- Buckskin Brindle: $1,125
- Dapple Gray: $1,125
Reasons For The Prices
Every single breed has the same speed, stamina, acceleration, etc. Rumors that the new breeds are braver than the base Fox Trotters are not based in fact. Each horse in RDO behaves the same way if a predator appears. The horse will be spooked, and players can calm it with LT/L2/M2. After that, the horse will be fine unless the predator shouts or roars. Immediately after the predator makes a sound, the horse will buck, throwing the player off of the saddle.

The only reasons to buy the new variants are aesthetics and availability. The two Fox Trotters from the offline game can only be purchased at level 58 in RDO. However, the new variants are available at level 1. For that reason, they cost $175 more. That is not exactly throw-away money, but it is worth it for those that want to get a Fox Trotter early in the game.
