  • World of Warcraft adds new player tags to database, potentially targeting frog farmers in Mists of Pandaria Remix event.
  • WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria event allows players to farm Gulp Frogs for currencies, nerfed efficiency shortly after.
  • CriteriaTree entries may lead to rewards or rollbacks for frog farming, addressing ongoing issues in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria.

World of Warcraft has added a few new player tags to its CriteriaTree database, suggesting it is trying to identify characters who farmed Gulp Frogs in the Mists of Pandaria Remix event. Though it could amount to nothing, Blizzard might not be completely done addressing frog farmers in the World of Warcraft event.

WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria is a throwback event where players can experience the old expansion with modern convenience. In order to farm the event’s currencies, some World of Warcraft fans rediscovered the Gulp Frog – an enemy on the Timeless Isle that was once farmed in the original Mists of Pandaria. Unfortunately, World of Warcraft nerfed the efficiency of Remix frog farming not long after it began.

However, it seems like World of Warcraft might be planning to do something about frog farming in the future. As discovered by Wowhead, World of Warcraft added some new entries in the WoW CriteriaTree database in a series of hotfixes on May 21. This new data seemingly identifies if a player participated in frog farming before it was nerfed in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria for some purpose.

History of Frog Farming in WoW: Mists of Pandaria

  • Gulp Frogs are an Elite enemy on the Timeless Isle who drop various currencies, including Lesser Charms of Good Fortune, cloak threads, and Bronze in WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria.
  • Farming Gulp Frogs was popular in the original Mists of Pandaria to acquire Timeless Coins and Sha Crystals, and has returned again in WoW Remix.
  • Because they spawn in a small location, they can be killed quickly, tricking the game into thinking it is a high traffic area to spawn them rapidly.
  • World of Warcraft recently nerfed frog farming by removing Lesser Charms of Good Fortune from their loot tables in Mists of Pandaria Remix.

It is unlikely that this will be a prelude to banning World of Warcraft players who farmed frogs before the nerf, as CriteriaTree is usually used to track in-game statistics like achievement progress. It is possible these data entries will be used to give a reward to characters who didn’t get the boost from frog farming, roll back accounts that did, create a new achievement, or track information for internal use only. It is entirely possible fans will never see anything come of these new hotfixes.

Either way, problems that led to the frog farming fiasco of WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria remain. The steep Bronze costs of both upgrading items and purhcasing the abundance of cosmetic rewards in the game mode has led players to desperately search for easy ways to farm currency, only for most of the exploits to be fixed shortly after. World of Warcraft has promised to make the endgame more rewarding, so hopefully these fixes can help fans as the event continues.
