September 2025 Will Be A Huge Month For Horror Movie Fans

The upcoming year is stacked with an exciting lineup of new movies, but horror fans will feast big in one particular month of 2025: September. From sequels to some of the biggest franchises in the genre to standalone films featuring Hollywood A-listers, the month’s schedule is a gift that keeps on giving.

The best part about 2025? There’s a movie for everyone. Comic book fans will get new Fantastic Four and Superman films, action aficionados can look forward to Tom Cruise’s final Mission: Impossible outing, sci-fi lovers will be hyped for Jurassic World: Rebirth and Avatar: Fire and Ash, and some live-action fun awaits in How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch. However, the horror genre stands out, with September offering a strikingly diverse lineup for audiences around the world.

Horror Films Releasing In September 2025

Last Rites Will Wrap Up The Conjuring Universe

The world’s favorite paranormal investigator couple returns, possibly for the final time in The Conjuring universe. Last Rites will be a direct sequel to 2021’s The Devil Made Me Do It, with director Michael Chaves returning to conclude James Wan’s iconic franchise, hopefully on a high note. Each new entry in the series, including the Annabelle and Nun spinoffs, has consistently elevated fear and dived deeper into demonology.

More importantly, the profits have steadily increased over the years, making it the highest-earning horror franchise of all time. The exact case the Warrens will tackle in this upcoming film is still under wraps, but it promises to be a fitting Conjuring-worthy finale.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is confirmed to be released on September 5, 2025.

Jigsaw Returns To The Franchise In Saw XI

Another James Wan-created horror phenomenon returns in September 2025. Unlike The Conjuring: Last Rites, however, this installment doesn’t appear to be a conclusion. The Saw franchise shows no signs of stopping, with the upcoming eleventh film following 2023’s Saw X, which was a refreshing addition to the series. Initially slated for release in 2024, Lionsgate pushed it back a year to make room for Never Let Go.

Kevin Greutert returns to direct, but plot details remain scarce, apart from what can be inferred from Saw X’s ending. That film, set between the events of the original Saw (2004) and Saw II, left Cecilia alive, with Jigsaw and his accomplice Amanda in a different country.

Saw XI is scheduled for release on September 26, 2025.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Reinvents Frankenstein In The Bride!

Franchise horror may not be everyone’s cup of tea, and this Gothic sci-fi monster film by Maggie Gyllenhaal could be the antidote. Dropping the “franchise” label doesn’t mean compromising on scale or lore. The Bride! is loosely inspired by the timeless story of Frankenstein’s bride and boasts a star-studded cast, including Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, and the director’s superstar brother, Jake Gyllenhaal. Interestingly, Netflix passed on the project in favor of a different Frankenstein film currently in development by Guillermo del Toro.

The Bride! is expected to premiere on September 26, 2025.

Jordan Peele’s Him Is A Sports Horror

For fans of niche indie horror flicks, Jordan Peele is producing yet another intriguing project through his Monkeypaw Productions label. Originally titled Goat, the film revolves around a retiring legend and an up-and-coming athlete. At first glance, it seems far removed from horror, but Him has been described as “sports horror” – an unlikely combination of two distant genres – making it all the more intriguing. Additionally, Marlon Wayans in the lead role is an offbeat choice, considering his status as a satire horror icon, thanks to the Scary Movie and A Haunted House series.

Him is scheduled for release on September 19, 2025.

An Untitled Insidious 6 Film Is Underway

While this isn’t technically a September release, its August 29 premiere means the film’s major theatrical run will fall in the following month. At this rate, September 2025 seems more like a celebration of James Wan’s works than just a month for horror movies. Blumhouse Productions is expanding the Insidious franchise with two upcoming projects. First announced was Thread: An Insidious Tale, directed by Moon Knight’s Jeremy Slater. However, Sony Pictures has reportedly scheduled an untitled Insidious sequel for the August 29 release date, likely continuing the original storyline. Speaking to Discussing Film in 2023, producer Jason Blum shared his thoughts on the fifth installment being the last:

] is going to be the last we’re going to see of Insidious for a while. It may not be a forever rest, but it’s certainly going to be a very long rest. So, if someone comes up with some idea in 10 years, who knows? But there’s not a plan – as there has been with every prior Insidious movie – there’s no current plan in place for number six.

More Horror Movies Releasing In The Rest Of 2025

For now, September 2025 is shaping up to be spookier than the Halloween season itself. But the thrills and chills won’t be limited to just one month. The rest of the year promises even more treats for horror fans. This includes sequels like The Black Phone 2, M3GAN 2.0, and Five Nights At Freddy’s 2, as well as reboots and adaptations like Wolf Man, Until Dawn, and The Monkey. Of course, there are also some original director-centric horror flicks like Ryan Coogler’s Sinners or Steven Soderbergh’s Presence on their way.
