The Elder Scrolls 6 still may be a long way away from finally seeing the light of day, but there are a lot of expectations that have been placed on Bethesda’s next fantasy action adventure. After the game was prematurely announced, The Elder Scrolls 6 quickly became one of the most anticipated titles in gaming, and Bethesda has a chance to make it shine where its predecessors, Skyrim and Starfield, sorely lacked.

Bethesda is known for its ability to create large-scale worlds that players can spend hours exploring. This was beautifully demonstrated with the introduction of Skyrim back in 2011. At the time, Skyrim was completely groundbreaking, and although Starfield‘s exploration may not compare to Skyrim‘s, it is still a great adventure in itself. Both games have great strengths that demonstrate Bethesda’s skills, but they also showcase one of the developer’s biggest weaknesses; building a strong main campaign.

It may seem like a small detail, but Bethesda Game Studios has its work cut out for it when designing the opening for The Elder Scrolls 6.

When it comes to Skyrim and Starfield, both games have been applauded for a variety of things. From Skyrim‘s deep lore and fun mechanics to Starfield‘s shipbuilding, these titles have plenty to be proud of. However, the campaign story is not usually something that is mentioned when praising these games. Bethesda has proven that it can craft massive worlds. Now, it needs to prove that it can build an impressive story that keeps players focused, and The Elder Scrolls 6 is a great place to start.

Making The Elder Scrolls 6 a Story-Focused Game

Bethesda likes to embrace exploration, but that doesn’t mean a strong story can’t be attached to that sense of adventure. With Skyrim, the story is pretty much left in the background, and many players get the most enjoyment out of side quests and experimenting with what the game’s mechanics are capable of. When it comes to Starfield, the initial elements of the story are interesting, but it ultimately feels half-baked. The Elder Scrolls 6 presents an exciting chance for Bethesda to truly prove itself as a storyteller and not just as a world builder.

Of course, there is the argument that exploration is at the true heart of Bethesda games, and this is true. However, a balanced blend of Bethesda’s world-building capabilities entangled with a compelling story has the ingredients to birth a game even bigger than Skyrim. Bethesda has stuck to a clear formula through the years, but that’s not always a good thing. Growth is essential for keeping players interested, and offering a deep main campaign on top of all the other great things that make Bethesda games so much fun would be thrilling.

The Beginning of a New Bethesda Era

The Elder Scrolls 6 could signal a brand-new era for Bethesda, and that’s an exciting prospect. After the mixed reception Starfield has received since its launch last year, Bethesda has a moment to go back to the drawing board and reevaluate what its future games might look like. The Elder Scrolls 6 is a long-awaited game that has been anticipated since 2018, and it would be disappointing to see the game receive the same mixed feedback that Starfield faced.

This year finally brought some development updates for The Elder Scrolls 6. It’s great that the game is currently in a playable state, but a rich story will really be needed in order to bring Bethesda to a completely new level. Whatever the future holds, The Elder Scrolls 6 is sure to make waves when it finally launches.
