Whether it’s an intimate supper with friends or a big family gathering, dinner parties are firmly back on the social calendar and we’re so here for it! But it doesn’t stop there, Brits have taken on a whole new world when it comes to hosting – imagine cute candle holders, table runners, floral arrangements and tableware.

In perfect timing, M&S commissioned a survey of over 2,000 people to uncover what makes the perfect dinner party across the UK, providing the nation with the tips and tricks they’ve been looking for.

Dinner party essentials

When it comes to being the perfect host, there are certain non-negotiables – a clean and tidy space (68%) and the perfect food and drink spread (54%) top the list for respondents. But 40% of Brits also say creating the right ambience and atmosphere is key!

Interestingly, the data also revealed that younger generations are at the forefront of the tablescaping trend, with 27% of 25–34-year-olds and 24% of 18–24-year-olds considering table décor a must-have – compared to just 20% of the general population.

“We’re seeing customers really lean into creating a sense of occasion at home,” says Karen Thomas, head of homeware design. “Whether that’s layering textures and colours with playful cabbageware, boho chic picnicware or channelling Italian summer vibes with Amalfi-inspired ceramics, tablescaping has become an expression of personality and a huge part of the fun of hosting.”

Planning makes perfect

We love to see that Brits are nothing if not organised. Nearly nine in ten (89%) say they like to plan their dinner parties at least a week in advance, with those aged 25–34 being the most meticulous planners. One in five (21%) said they prefer to organise a month ahead, compared to 17% of the general population – after all planning is key.

“Planning ahead makes all the difference,” adds Karen. “A menu with dishes you can prepare in advance, thoughtful table styling and small finishing touches like fresh florals or ambient lighting means you’ll spend more time enjoying the evening with your guests.”

The Challenges of Hosting

The survey then revealed that the most difficult part of hosting for Brits is managing time and logistics (27%), closely followed by planning the menu (24%), which is no surprise seeing as we all like to see our hard work pay off.

Interestingly, Gen Z (18-24 year olds) respondents admitted they struggle most with keeping guests entertained (20%) compared to the general population (10%), highlighting a demand for more than just great food. We love to see when hosts incorporate wholesome games and activities like candle painting or charades to keep the fun going and ultimately create more memories and laughter.

“You don’t need to overcomplicate entertainment,” says Karen. “A curated playlist, a fun conversation-starter or a simple activity can help keep the energy flowing if the evening needs a lift.”

Get ready for your spring dinner party with M&S’ top tips for hosting in style

  • Start planning at least a week in advance to give yourself plenty of time for menu prep and table styling.
  • Don’t underestimate the power of scent. 28% of 25–34-year-olds said choosing the right room fragrance was non-negotiable. Consider a diffuser or candle to set the mood.
  • Elevate your tablescape with layering. Use a textured tablecloth and elegant dinnerware to create an inviting atmosphere. Dinner candles and fresh flowers can be used to add height.
  • If the weather allows, take the party outside. A few soft throws, outdoor lanterns, and a beautifully laid garden table can turn a simple alfresco gathering into something memorable. M&S has a plethora of picnicware to make the most of those sunny days.
